Self-esteem, high or low, is more depictive of a story we tell about ourselves. This is who I am. This is what I can do and this is how I think you visualize me. “Our assessments of our own worth are based on the judgements we imagine others make of us.” Sociologist Charles Horton Cooley states. “Moreover, our guesses about these judgements depend upon the qualities we see in these other people” (Cooley, 1902). Society appears to view the poverty-stricken as unconfident/having little self-worth/having low self-esteem. Low self-esteem is a weakened state that prevents someone from reaching self-actualization. One feels incompetent, inferior to others, and not good enough or worthy enough in life. Thus there is a feeling of shame. Low self-esteem with its feelings of shame, has long been considered fundamental parts of poverty. Amartyra Sen relates “the ability to go without low self-esteem (or shame) should be considered a basic capacity that is incorporated into general conceptions of poverty” (Reyes, 2007). Claims that poverty in early America provided the fulcrum for low self-esteem among the poor in society, were not all together true. Consequently, low self-esteem does not cause poverty. If that were the case, would not everyone with low self-esteem be impoverished? Booker T. Washington, once said: "I believe that any man's life will be filled with constant and unexpected encouragement, if he makes up his mind to do his level best each day, and as nearly as
Low self-esteem is someone’s overall emotional and how they value themselves, it is an evaluation for her or his own worth. Self-esteem is a judgement on yourself in this case low self-esteem is when someone feels that s/he is not worth nothing they feel useless to society. Unfortunately a person could never had low self-esteem but s/he is being bullied from someone else’s and s/he starts feeling useless if it is not treated immediately this can lead to low self-esteem. Low self-esteem can leads to problem in relationships, bad choices on work and in life, low self-esteem doesn’t let you to choose the right decisions you need to make. For example in this house there is a particular elderly who before he entered this house he didn’t have low self-esteem now he is being bullied by his carer he slaps him if he doesn’t want to eat any more resulting to this he now have low self-esteem that he doesn’t want to talk to anyone about it.
With all of the media 's hatred of poor people, it must affect their self-confidence and how they view the American Dream. Through her experience, Jennifer Mayer has noticed that very problem. While working in the soup kitchen, she noticed that most of the people who came in lived in "survival mode" and only lived "day-to-day" with no real goals. They had no dreams of success because they believed it to be impossible (Mayer). One reason for this self-esteem issue is their lack of education. Since poor people rarely have a college education, they feel like they have no future. This can often cause them to give up on their dreams and resort to crime (Reef 225-226). Also, because poor people are below America 's social and economic system, they will often give up on their dreams.
Most people face self esteem problems at different levels. At some point in life people face this problem without realizing it. In the essay The Trouble with Self-Esteem written by Lauren Slater starts of by demonstrating a test. Self esteem test that determines whether you have a high self-esteem or low self-esteem. The question to be answered however is; what is the value and meaning of self-esteem? The trouble with self-esteem is that not everyone approaches it properly, taking a test or doing research based of a certain group of people is not the way to do so.
Self esteem is how an individual evaluates their worth as a person. It is not a person’s talents or abilities or how they are seen by others It is seen as the feeling of not being good enough. However, that does not mean people with high self esteem view themselves as
Starting as children, people are inclined to strive to be socially accepted. With social standards being very difficult to fit into, many people feel as though they do not belong to a set group of people; therefore, they tend to have a lower self esteem which causes them to act out. Being isolated causes one to feel a lack of confidence within themselves because him or her can feel as though they are not wanted and do not belong. This low sense of self esteem affects a person’s motivation and mental health. Social norms can cause people to feel alone and as though they have no one there for them. On the other hand, belonging to a community or a specific group can allow people to feel as though they have a support system, making them feel more confident in themselves and becoming better in their overall life. Feeling accepted and supported by people can increase intellectual activity and boost a person’s self esteem tremendously. Belonging and acceptance increase and decrease self esteem thus dictating a person’s behavior.
The three best predictors of poverty in the U.S are race-ethnicity, education, and sex of the head of household.Race-ethnicity is one of the strongest predictors of poverty, with Native Americans having the highest poverty rates at twenty-seven percent. There are more poorer whites than any other race, but that is only due to the larger population of whites in the U.S.The second predictor of poverty is education. The more education someone has the less chance they have of reaching poverty, but race-ethnicity can still increase someone's chances of reaching poverty no matter what their education level is.The third predictor of poverty is head of household. If a woman is the head of household the chances of poverty are much higher than if a man
The short story "Shame" by Dick Gregory, clearly shows that poverty brings many hardships as well as a great deal of shame. However, there are still ways to gain pride and happiness. This story shows that by emulating somebody you respect, even a very poor person can derive pride from small actions, which the average person sees as insignificant.
Some will argue that low self-esteem never was a time but that it’s a figment of imaginations. However, researchers have proven the increasing rate of low self-esteem. And if it is a recent issue, how come it is such a big issue. Or if it is a figment of imagination, then why do people face this problem different and why do they handle it differently?
In a study conducted by Oscar Lewis, he claims “the low-income population of San Juan and New York and found a widespread way of thinking that he called fatalism” (Macionis 2013:88). He determined people who are raised in poverty are more likely to have, “low self-esteem, limited aspirations, and a sense of powerlessness” (Macionis 2013:88). Some ethnicities, mainly the minority, are described as “oppositional culture” when they succeed or portray stereotyped white characteristics of prosperity in order to discourage advancement. People raised in poverty can find it hard to believe in a better life with education and success if they are only exposed to below average condition of living, education, income, and health care. Poverty is not only an issue of income, it also has negative effects that are detrimental to a person over time.
Self-esteem is essentially how you feel about yourself and how you judge your value. It is a state of mind that can be changed. These days many people are having low self-esteem issues. In this article by Amee LaTour, she has talked about what are the causes of low self-esteem. She presents her points in the form of an article. This paper will review Amee LaTour’s arguments and will assess the quality of her writing and concentrate on any zones of shortcomings in this article.
Self-esteem and self-concept may not be synonymous on the surface, but after looking over their meanings, they appear interconnected. Just as self-esteem becomes impacted by personal surroundings and environments, McGraw posits that one’s “self” is, “like a chameleon, takes[ing] on the emotional colors of history and environment in which is has existed” (McGraw, 63). A person’s family, parents, and other negative life experiences shapes self-esteem impacts self and self-esteem. Throughout class discussions, the idea rose that even with environmental factors shaping self-perception or self-esteem, these emotions or feelings do not have to impact a person’s future. McGraw in his first chapter appears to be leading a reader down the same path to reach the realization that distorted self-concepts do not have to stay or
Poverty is “the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor” (Dictionary.com, 2017). Based off this definition poverty is a condition that can cause a cascade of cause and effect actions that is detrimental to families and individuals both physically and mentally.
