Poverty is a major problem all over the world. When looking at poverty in certain regions it has been determined that it is also a major problem within the United States. The first thing to determine is the definition of poverty as defined by the United States government. Next, a discussion over the scope of poverty in the United States, Missouri, Kansas City, and Jackson County. Then, a consideration over contributing factors of poverty as it currently exists in the United States. Followed by an identification of possible remedies or changes to policies that presently contribute to the problem of poverty in the United States. Throughout this essay, these items will be discussed and analyzed to help form a better picture of the poverty issue in this country. The United States Census Bureau defines poverty in a way that uses a set of money income thresholds that vary by family size and composition to determine who is in poverty. If the total income for a family or unrelated individual falls below the relevant poverty threshold, then the family (and every individual in it) or unrelated individual is considered in poverty. The measure of poverty determines if a family 's total income is less than the family 's threshold, then that family and every individual in it are considered in poverty (“Definitions” 1).
