“Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” (John Dalberg-Acton) Power always leads to corruption, especially in the story of Macbeth. The main character, Macbeth, becomes more and more corrupt as the story continues. He gets his first taste of power when he becomes The Thane of Cawdor, he then begins murdering to become king, and finally begins murdering people so he can keep his power. Macbeth has very little power at the beginning of the story. He is basically a soldier that protects the king during the war. Macbeth hated having such a small amount of power and he began to desire more. Macbeth then encounters the three witches that tell him all about the power that he is going to gain. First they speak of him becoming the Thane of Cawdor, and then the king. Hearing all this makes Macbeth excited yet he does not believe it to be possible that he will acquire so much power. Then, Ross and Angus arrive with news from the king that verifies what the witches said about him becoming Thane of Cawdor. This makes Macbeth think that what the witches said will come true and this is where corruption begins to overcome Macbeth. …show more content…

He thought King Duncan would name him as heir. He is not content with the power he has so he begins to plot to kill King Duncan in order to gain the power that he desires. At first, Macbeth has second thoughts about committing the act. He has a lot of desire to be king but does not want to commit murder. However, when Lady Macbeth hears that he could become king, she pushes him to commit murder. Macbeth's plan of killing Duncan to become king works out flawlessly, or so he thought, and he was named the new king of Scotland.
