Power and authority have become central towards the decision-making process in the social environment. As a student, power and authority are fascinating factors based on the leadership position held by the institution. Developing an understanding of power and authority from a personal perspective is towards understanding how the two concepts differ, relate or overlap in the decision-making process. There are diverse reasons as to why power and authority are central in organising constructively within the social environment. From the multiple components in the definition process to the effects that the two concepts have on the social dynamics, the comprehension of the two concepts should ensure an understanding of their interplay. Nonetheless, the term is explicit and emanates from the Latin word auctoritas, which has several meanings; reputation, assurance, affirmation, veracity, and significance (Njegovan, Vukadinovic & Nesic, 2011). As regards to the notion of ambiguity, the emphasis on authority is mainly on the concept that it denotes specific individuals with legitimacy in exerting influence on others. Thus, Day (1963) recognises that there are two main forms of authority. Epistemic entails authority that is expert based. On the other hand, deontic authority mainly originates from obligations and control. The comprehension of the two types of authority plays a pivotal role in shaping the decision-making process. Day (1963) believes that the two types of authority are closely related in the definition or use in the day to day environment. As a clear example, deontic authority ought to at some level be based on either knowledge or competence. Additionally, the epistemic or expert based authority as per distinctive pundits emanates from the concepts of parental, moral, political or religious authority. In the learning or social environment, the main reasons for subjection to authority emanate from different factors. Some authors such as Maner & Mead (2010) emphasize that common sense can be a directive towards individuals conforming to the commands of those in authority.
