Steinbeck’s Idea on how people can have a chance at the brief nature of power before it shifts can be summed up into the quote: “The actions of those in power can have enormous consequences – a price they themselves almost never have to pay” – Barack Obama
Human’s desire is to control and dominate others through the use of power. However, the shifts and the notions of power can change as new people gain control. Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men illustrates the transient nature of power through the characters desire to control and dominate others.

It is due to his lack of control over everyone but Lenny that this desire for control comes from.
George (page 58) “An’ it’d be our own, an’ nobody could can us. If we don’t like a guy we can say, ‘Get the hell out,”
This indicates how George desired control over people who worked for him on his dream farm, before the dream was even a reality. Thus showing how George went through the brief nature of the shifts and notions of power, as George dreamed of the ability to control other people while not actually having any control over his current employment or work colleagues.

This demonstrates how Curley’s wife’s uses her attraction of her body to achieve her desired outcome over the men, thus showing how Curley’s wife goes through the temporary nature of the shifts and notions of power to control the other men while having her life influenced by her husband.

Curley shows how he uses his strength and position to achieve his desire to dominate the working men that he considers to be a threat due to their size; Lennie being a clear example. It is due to Curley’s lack of height that his desire for dominance and control derives from.
Curley (page 27) “well, nex’ time you answer when your spoken to.”
This displays Curley asserting his dominance over Lennie as he feels threatened by his height. It can be seen throughout the book that Curley’s body language towards Lennie and the other men taller than Curley is a dominant show of force to the other men to assert his authority over them.
