The biggest distractions as an acute care leader that impacts my work are numerous administrative meetings; they tend to take up most of my daily schedule leaving me with little time to talk to the patients. To alleviate this challenge I have allocated time on my daily calendar to participate in bedside inter-disciplinary and leader rounding on the unit with the team to discuss patient plan of care with other healthcare teams, patient and family. Healthcare just like any other type of service industry is reliant on possessing satisfied clientele. Scheduling practices help to manage the patient flow by establishing certain guidelines regarding how late a patient can arrive, and still be seen without disrupting the patient flow

Within the case, The Carbondale Clinic, it is apparent that a scheduling problem exists which has then resulted in patients being unsatisfied with the amount of time they must wait to be seen for his or her scheduled appointment with the physician. It is also evident that physicians prefer to have a full schedule without taking into consideration the possibility of emergencies that may arise throughout the day that will contribute to patients having to wait even longer. It is pertinent that the manager sits down with the staff to determine what is the most logical solution to help resolve the scheduling problem, taking into consideration what the physicians want along with ensuring patient satisfaction.

The other challenge is that clinicians have limited time to spend with the clients and carry out assessments. This is because the patients would be asleep most of the time and at times even miss appointments.

This paper will examine my clinical practical experience at Holy Cross Aspen Hill facility. . I will share what I learned at the site, activities and tasks I completed, any observations on workflow and processes, thoughts I had on what could have improved my experience. Patients will appreciate that the time they spend with you is focused on them. They won’t feel as though they are wasting their valuable time; instead, they’ll appreciate that you understand the importance of their time and schedules.

The practicum experience is at Communities at Indiana Haven. It is mainly a long-term home facility. It has three units: rehabilitation unit, Alzheimer unit, and resident long-term home unit. Staff enter each unit using their cards and they have to make sure that each door is closed behind them. For the three units, there are two RNs working during the day-shifts, while only one RN working at the night-shifts. Also during the day there are six LPNs and nine nursing assistants. Overall, I enjoyed practicum and having the opportunity to gain more experience working with children. I also enjoyed getting to practice what we learned the week before every Monday when I went into practicum because I tried to incorporate or carry out what guidance strategy we learned about the next time I went in to practicum to really ingrain the strategy in my head. I also enjoyed how I got feedback throughout the semester from the Lab School Teacher’s because when I did practicum in HDFS 224 I barely got any feedback besides at the end of the semester. The major learning in this module for me has been in nurse scheduling. I found the issue with nurse scheduling most challenging and complex since they are an important component of healthcare (Maenhout & Vanhoucke, 2009). When developing a system for appointments it is important to consider the provider preference and the well being of their patients. Not all providers work the same and a provider may develop a schedule suitable for their practice that allows time for he or she to perform other duties that come with their position.
