Diversity:
In my practicum I had a classroom of 20 children. 1 child was African American, the rest where Caucasian. All of these children were low-income children, on free and reduced lunch. This classroom was also a split classroom consisting of half kindergarten students and half slower learning first grade students. This made the classroom very diverse and allowed me to see different ways to teach students in this situation. My teacher taught her lessons by grouping children based on their learning level. This allowed for each student to get more one onone help from the teacher, along with having the lesson adapted to his or her grade level. One child in the classroom had developmental delay in fine and gross motor ability. This student left the classroom each day at a specific time and had received help from a specialist. I was fortunate to be able to watch the therapy and learn how they help students like this in the school district.
Technology:
My practicum classroom had 4 computers, 3 Ipads, and a smart bored. I got to help students using all three of these technologies. I used all three to help teach vocabulary to the students. The teacher used the black board also for math and vocabulary lessons. The teacher would use her

Cultural Competence: In my practicum, my teacher taught the students about the United States history. These lessons where focused on slavery, and native Americans. I took notes on the way she interacted and introduced these topics too the children, since they are such diverse topics. In the classroom there was one African American student. She incorporated the lesson on slavery into diversity and treating others as one should treat themselves. She used the diversity in the classroom with the African American student as a good example and it seemed to really connect well with the students. My practicum teacher let me interact in the lesson by reading a diverse book about the Native Americans and pilgrims coming to
Furthermore, during this week, I met with Linda two times, each time for two hours and discussed in more detailed the "process improvement" project that she is working on. When I began my practicum at Chicago Proton Center, one of my practicum objectives was to be able to describe the Project management and Process improvement. Thus, most of my time this week was spent learning about this project and pleased to say that I successfully achieved this goal. Subsequently, I will explain in more details what are the various parts that go into this project, the general process of how the project was initially planned, developed, and completed. While the center struggles to meet its projected patients volume, Linda's project focuses to increase patients volume by improving communication across the departments within organization, to identify the issues that other departments have that affect the overall patient flow in the Chicago Proton Center.
Participating in a third-year practicum placement has been very effective in increasing my knowledge surrounding Ontario’s context of youth services. Now, in my last few months of my time at Alternative Learning Styles and Outlooks (ALSO), I have continued to relate my in-class knowledge to a practical setting. I recently experienced the struggle of maintaining social work principals while trying to balance support of the Reading and Parents Program (RAPP) and maintain self-determination. Building from this, I learnt the importance of continual advocacy, through prosperous and difficult times. I learnt that a slight change in a slightly related subject might completely cut funding for essential programs to non-profit organizations. I also took place in a community consultation regarding the
In my most recent position as a kindergarten teacher, I have worked with a diverse group of students. Being a Title I school, I have worked with students of poverty, students with disabilities, ESOL students, as well as affluent students. No matter the child’s background they all had something in common, if their social, emotional, and personal needs were met, and they
In order for teachers to create a learning environment that is culturally responsive to each individual student, a teacher must learn the student’s funds of knowledge. The importance of learning the funds of knowledge of your students is crucial. A teacher can approach learning more about a student’s prior knowledge and culture in a variety of ways, including, instructing personal interviews with questions about their personal life such as what are the most important things in your life. Another way to discover your student’s funds of knowledge is by placing yourself in their shoes and doing a school and community walk through. You can also be provided with more insight into your student’s lives by conducting an adult interview from someone that also lives in the same community. In order for me to create lessons and classroom practices that are culturally responsive is by discovering my student’s funds of knowledge. I am at Blackwell Elementary School, which is located in Marietta and is apart of the Cobb County District. After having the students create heart maps and interviewing them, doing a school and community walkthrough, and talking with an adult, I was greatly impacted by all the new information and perspectives I learned. Without going through this process to obtain the information, I would have no knowledge on my students or the community surrounding Blackwell besides what meets the eye. This experience impacted my own thinking about the school I am working in for
practicum I was able to lead a professional development workshop about understanding poverty in order to better connect with our school population. This experience helped me develop my participative style of leadership. I was able to teach but also learn from the faculty in an open collaborative forum that helped us all make improvements to our craft. This experience taught me how to present to a faculty in a fun, engaging way that encouraged their participation. I learned that I should involve the faculty more in discussion among themselves and help them learn more from each other’s experiences.
In my third and fourth week of the practicum, I have become more comfortable talking to my patients. These five days paved a way for me to actually be more confident and use my nursing judgement and communicate with my patients. I week four, I feel like I am starting to feel more like a nurse, what’s surprising is that the patients themselves, actually forget that I am a student. I did not even know that I had a powerfully voice. Every time I am educating patients, sometimes they are in the room with their family members, in the end I am not only talking to mom, but I am also educating the family members to. To my surprise, they all pay attention, and listen to me. They look up to me for answers. The best moment was when the night of the 27th, I helped another nurse with her C-section patient, I helped in getting her catheter out, and clean her, helped her walk (She was in bed for literally 5 days in labor and delivery, and fainted 3 times there). She was only 20, so her boyfriend was also scared, and it’s their first baby. We finally got her to walking. The next day, when I was coming out of my patient’s room for the first introduction after report change, this young man walked toward me happy, jumping as if he wanted to hug me, and all the sudden started telling me how his girlfriend is doing, how she is now able to walk, and doesn’t faint anymore. He was just thanking me of the job I did the night before. It was the happiest day of my life. Because my nurse was place on
There are also iPads, desktop computers, document cameras, and Smartboards available for teacher use. Within this scope and sequence each of the available technologies will be used.
I used a SmartBoard to demonstrate my ability to use multiple forms of technology to support child learning in large group settings. I also used an iPad to provide one-on-one and small group direct instruction. Using iPads/iPhone cameras I videotaped and photographed children to share with families and display in the environment.
I am amazed, and pleased with how much I have grown in the last 7 weeks in this course. Personally, I have obtained a higher level of self confidence, a stronger determination of college success, and most importantly a stronger relationship with Christ. Professionally, this course has helped me by understanding more about time management, and goal setting, which is so important to a successful retail manager. Academically spaeking, I was astonised in this area most of all in my growth at GCU. I am no longer afraid of writing, grammar, nor English. Looking back at my writings, as opposed to now, I am doing much, much better, I understand I have a ways to go in learning about writing, but at least I realize better writing is obtainable for me.
Since I started this class, I have a learned a great deal about cultural diversity in the classroom and abroad. My perspective has changed slightly but my knowledge of this subject has improved. In my family, my father taught me about the civil rights movement and the evils of segregation in the U.S. My parents taught me to be tolerant of all humans, no matter what they look like, how they dress, or their sexual orientation. My family has always been liberal thinkers who taught me the dark history of racism and bigotry in this country. As an educator I would be accepting to all race, creeds, and religious peoples.
Every fourth-year teacher trainees will have to conduct practicum and will work under the guideline of their associate teachers and supervisors. The purpose of doing the practicum are to put training into practice, to become accustomed to teaching in the tertiary school settings, and to develop and expand each trainee’s teaching expertise and confidence. In the following paragraph, I will express what I have learnt from doing practicum to reflect on my past teaching strengths and weaknesses from the teaching practicum.
Evidence based instruction is a collection of practices that have been tested and show a record of success and improvement. Evidence based instruction is based on information that is reliable and with verifiable as well as valid evidence that shows when this practice or program is implemented, there is a moderate to substantial chance that students will make strides in achievement. Research based means that there has been researched, but does not definitely imply success or achievement.
On Friday March 7th I attended Ripon College Youth Conference where I learned about unhealthy relationships, drugs and alcohol, and legal consequences of 16, 17, and 18 year olds. Throughout this conference, I have learned many things that were interesting as well as helpful. To begin, my first session was on the importance of healthy relationships and how to handle an unhealthy relationship. My biggest takeaway from this session was that a relationship doesn’t have to be romantic but can be with friends and family as well. Also, once you start making excuses in a relationship the relationship has turned unhealthy. In my second session, I learned about drugs and alcohol. This session taught me about Tyrannizing Image, which is the shared concept
The practicum took place in Fudacion Hogar de Cuenca. Fudacion Hogar is a clinic that has been in existence for 7 years. Doing a practicum in this clinic does help the students who want to pursue a career in medical field to see how medicine is practiced in other countries. This clinic allowed 12 of us to be stationed in different departments that they have such as urology, general medicine, laboratory, ophthalmology, allergology, physical therapy, pharmacy, dermatology, dentistry, traumatology, and hospital. Every week, we were given a schedule that showed us where we were supposed to be during the week. The schedule was well organized because each one of us got the opportunity to observe various department of the clinic. As for me, I was able to observe doctors in some of the departments such as general medicine, physical therapy, pharmacy, ophthalmology, laboratory, allergology, dermatology, dentistry, and hospital. In addition, I was able to learn some materials of each department.
I spent my time doing my practicum at Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City. I worked under Laura Garret who is the Director of Resident Life. She made sure to assign me to a different area of the facility every few days. By doing this I was able to experience the Independent Living, Assisted Living , Nursing Home Department and Epworth at Home Areas.
