Question#3:
Visit the PMI.org website, or through other resources, find information about a recipient of the PMI Project of the Year award. In your own words, explain why this project received the award.
The project that I chose was the 2011 PMI project of the year award recipient, Prairie Waters Project in Aurora Colorado. This project is an incredible example of how project management can be the difference between life and death for a community. The town of Aurora was down to a fresh water reserve of nine months well below the three to five years recommended. The project was designed to begin in 2006, take five years and cost $854 million. The group to undertake the project was Colorado local CH2M Hill. After a round with the city, the

I agree with the majority and believe that the estimate is realistic in stating that 20 percent of the project time should be in the initiating and planning process groups. If the time suggested is spent on the two most important processes it’s a greater possibility you will spend less time in execution and the other phases of the project. It’s a big mistake to shortchange the two most crucial phases of the project. Spending a fair amount of time on these two phases can reduce cost, duration, and increase quality throughout the life of the project.

This is an optimal time to present the project sponsor with an analysis that can help to interpret and evaluate the expected outcome. Providing the business case for approval helps to ensure the project sponsors not only have realistic expectations, but also helps to keep those involved on the same page. Lastly, the use of a business case for approval early on can help to “maintain the morale of team members and minimize the possibility of scope creep” (McConnell,

The Central Valley Project (CVP) is a Federal water project set up and run by the US Bureau of Reclamation to provide water for the Central Valley in California. Through twenty dams and reservoirs the CVP facilitates the collection and delivery of water for irrigation, municipal, and industrial use, as well as producing hydropower, providing flood control and recreational facilities on their reservoirs. The CVP provide a good example of how cost allocation works within a vast organization. I will use this organization to describe the method used by the CVP to allocate cost and whether I agree or disagree with their methods. I will also be identifying situations where common costs are allocated. I will explain the impact of allocating

The measure of how an IT project impacts the practices of business regarding its strategy is the ultimate value. Effective business cases for business investments indicate the link between IT projects and the strategies of the companies that engage in the same(Wild, Wild, & Han, 2014). Some of the methods that can be used in this assessment by a firm include:
Briefly describe the problem or issue that you have decided to be the topic for your project proposal in order to orient your classmates and faculty
Water pollution has become a major problem in our water sources. People think that when they litter or dump in our waters that their little contribution will not hurt anything, but everyone’s little contributions add up to some major problems. Our water ecosystems and the species that reside in them are being destroyed and we need to take the steps necessary to stop this. Why would anyone use the source of most of the world’s food as a dumping ground for garbage? People need to start realizing what it is they are doing when they do not take the proper steps to dispose of their garbage and the problems they are making for the future.
This case study analyzed five different projects Target Corporation had to decide on capital spent for which project created the most value and the most growth for the company and its shareholders. By analyzing the financial statements and exhibits of each project, I was able to determine the positives and negatives of each of these alternatives. The alternatives were Gopher Place, Whalen Court, The Barn, Goldie’s Square, or Stadium Remodel.
This project was chosen simply because the members of our group saw a need that we

The nature and scope of a project is determined at the initiation stage. This involves analyzing the business needs, developing goals, budgets, tasks, deliverables, and the stakeholder analysis. The project planning stage determines the planning team, develops the scope, and identifies work breakdown structure and activities that will be needed to complete deliverables. The planning stage also estimates time and cost activities, develop schedule and risk plan, and gain formal approval for work to begin. The executing stage involves all processes used to meet the project requirement and involves managing people and resources. The process that entails the identification of potential problems and

The second project we were assigned that year and that I enjoyed was to research two authors from the 1800s or so, in collaboration with a partner that we got assigned to. For the first author we had the option to either create a power point presentation or create our own website about that particular author. My partner and I choose to build our
During the project initiation phase, I can work collaboratively with the project sponsor in the development of project charter and lead up to the formal authorisation of the project/ new phase. From the sponsor’s project SOW (Business need, product scope), Business case etc., I can identify measurable project objectives, high level requirements, risks, summary milestones and budget and approval authorities. The key deliverables in this phase are project charter and stakeholder lists.
