Atticus said, “They’ve done it befor and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it-seems that only children weep”(Lee 285). To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee. It is about two siblings , Jem and Scout, who live in a small town called Maycomb. Their father Atticus, is a well known lawyer, who is defending an African American that was accused of raping a white women. Throughout the novel, Jem and Scout are introduced to discrimination and learn that it’s an everlasting problem. Throughout the book, Scout was being discriminated because she was a girl. Dill said, “Jem, you and me can play and Scout can watch if she’s scared” (Lee 51). This demonstrates that Dill and Jem think she can't do certain things just because she is a girl. Scout was always convinced that being a girl was a bad thing and by doing boy things, she could avoid being a “bad girl”. “I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that’s why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could go off and find some to play with” (Lee 54). This proves that Scout is getting yelled at for thinking like a girl. She is noticing Jem’s recklessness ideas. This states that sexism is a notable topic in To Kill a …show more content…

I think Harper Lee used ageism to show that just like African Americans and white people have a hard time getting along with one another, so do people from different age groups. Scout said, “If she was on the porch when we passed, we would be raked by her wrathful gaze, subjected to ruthless interrogation regarding our behavior, and given a melancholy prediction on what we would amount to when we grew up, which was always nothing”(Lee 132). This proves that Scout and Jem hated Mrs. Dubose. Mrs. Dubose could never be pleased and lived alone. “She was very old; she spent most of each day in bed and the rest of it was in a wheelchair”(Lee 132). This shows that she is an old, mean lady with no one to talk to. Although Jem and Scout hate her, they learned that people put stereotypes on old people. Scout and Jem were noticing that Atticus was becoming old. “Atticus was feeble: he was nearly fifty. When Jem and I asked how old he was, he said he got started late, which we felt reflected upon his abilities and manliness”(Lee 118). This justifies how Jem and Scout put a label on their dad by calling him old and too tired to do anything. This demonstrates agism is an important theme in To Kill a
