Assignment 1: Preparing a Company-Wide Migration to Windows 8 George Kelly Professor Raymond Schafer Administering Desktop Clients June 11, 2015 I would like to take this time to thank Chief Financial Officer and the Chief Information Officer for taking some time in their busy operation schedule to listen to my report. This report was created to address the concerns they have with the possibility of migrating from Windows 7 to the Windows 8 operating system for their company. The new UEFI secure boot helps to make the computer much more resistant to malware that attempts to infect the boot loader. User Interface (UI) has had a major upgrade in how the start menu is displayed and used by the user. This change is especially helpful to your employees that use laptops and tablets in the field. The desktop that your users are accustomed to is still available for those that require its access. WEAKNESS: Cost - The cost of the migration from Windows 7 to Windows 8 will require a sizable investment by the company, this will include any needed hardware upgrades, licensing of the software for the computers and any fees that may be required by support from outside vendors to assist with the migration. Downtime - There is a possibility of some downtime to deal with network incompatibilities’ that may arise as well as working with legacy applications that are not fully supported by the new operating system. Training – There will be a reduction of productivity initially due to a learning curve for the employees to get acclimated to the new systems. New Technology – As with any newer technology there may be some issues with software bugs they may become apparent after the migration. OPPORTUNITY: Improved Productivity - This change will lead to a much more productive work force in the field and in the factories.
