In taking any medication there are always positives and negative side effects. Overprescribing medication and over diagnosing different disease in children has caused these effects to become increasingly prevent in society today. An increasing number of children and teenagers are being prescribed drugs as a “quick fix” rather than treating the root problem. For example, in Nicholas DuPerret’s case his parents opted not to put him on medication, seeing it as just a quick fix that did not treat what was wrong with their son in the long run. Meanwhile, Noelle Demo was put on medication and her grades increased while her aggressive behavior decreased; this was seen as a “godsend” by her parents. However, doctors sometimes use medication to treat the symptoms of an illness rather than treating the root cause of it. Often, after being on a medication for so long, people can become dependent on them later in life and not know how to function properly without them. For example, a person that is prescribed Adderall may become dependent on it to focus and stay awake in school or work and without it their productivity and motivation levels may plummet. This could potentially be part of the reason why we see so much of an abuse of it in schools and high stress work environments; people are reliant on it and feel they need it to remain competitive. Prolonged use of certain medications can lead to the development of other illness in not only children but adults as well. Certain medications are hard for your body to filter and can cause organ damage; such as liver damage. In addition, some behavioral modification medicines can cause increases or decreases in body weight. In extreme cases it can lead to obesity or the development of an eating disorder that can form lifelong eating
