Whitley West Comm 463-01 – Conflict Management Prescriptive Approaches to Conflict Management: Art Therapy Through the use of arts approaches to conflict, we can observe how various approaches can help to raise our understanding of the conflict and lead to a constructive resolution. Art therapy is an effective tool for conflict resolution because it gives individuals the ability to create alternative solutions by role-playing, creative story telling/drawing, and group projects, etc. Art therapy is based on the idea that the creative process of art making facilitates recovery and is form of a nonverbal communication of thoughts and feelings. Like many other forms of counseling, it is useful in encouraging personal growth and can be used in a wide variety of settings such as: with children, adults, families, and in groups. It is a unique approach that can help individuals of all ages and backgrounds create meaning, find emotional relief, and achieve an increased sense of well-being. (Malchiodi, 2006) Art therapy is a mental health profession in which clients, facilitated by the art therapist, use art media, the creative process, and the resulting artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.
