Tufekci uses different strategies to convince her audience that present day protest, no longer has the same effect they did before social media. She proposes this theory by stating that “social media” has changed the game for protest. Tufekci gives examples of different type of protest throughout American history to show the effect it has on society. For example, the Women March of 2017, March on Washington of 1963, Antiwar Protest 2003, and the Tea Party protest of 2009. All these protests impacted America in different ways. Tufekci was able to grasp her audience attention by appealing to nature and authority. Tufekci is a writer who emphasizes on the effect technology has on politics and society The protests in American all had a different
Analyse the representations (1,2 and 3E) and choose the one which you think is the best representations of how effective peaceful protest was in securing civil rights in the USA
Gladwell’s piece explains why social media will not be an effective tool in organizing activism. He claims that social media is not a dangerous tool to truly change the existing state of affairs. Throughout his essay, Gladwell refers to many different protests throughout history and calls on the reader to discern that the events that did not use social media were better and more centrally organized and often more successful. The higher success rate in the protests without social media is cause of “strong tie“ phenomenon which is when people have an invested interest in the event due to emotional bonds and face to face social connections. An example that Gladwell uses of a successful protest was the Greensboro sit-ins. Due to face to face contact,
Many decisions had to be made when approaching discrimination and segregation; many wanted this to end. The debate on what was best to approach the dangers of fighting for what you believed was weighed down to two options; violent protests or nonviolent protests. In the graphic novel titled “March” written and experienced by John Lewis himself with designs by Nate Powell, depicts the struggles of civil rights and the fight to earn it. The novel goes off to show mostly nonviolent protests, but outside of the novel during the 1960’s depicts and describes a different approach; Violent and free Protests. Two of the most impactful civil rights leaders Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael despised the clean and peaceful protests as they thought it was
The 2010 Tea Party protests are the newest manifestation of an old tradition, one that traces back to the beginning of the twentieth-century and passage of the 16th Amendment which mandated a federal income tax (Martin 2013). Author Isaac William Martin (2013) tracks the history of five major rich people’s movements that occurred in the twentieth-century United States, to explain why movements occur and the impact, if any, they have on American society. This book serves as a compliment to Frances Fox Piven and Richard Cloward’s Poor People’s Movements (Martin 2013). The campaigns used as case studies in this novel include the campaign to abolish the estate tax and limit income surtax rate, the campaign for a constitutional amendment limiting tax level, the campaign to repeal federal income taxes, the
The purpose of the “Creative Protest” speech was to inspire more African Americans to stand for their rights as Americans. The Royal Ice Cream sit-in was the first non-violent protest in North Carolina. This speech was a motivation to others that was scared to stand up for their, fearing that they will go to jail. After the positive reaction from the Sit- in, Dr.Marvin Blanks phone Dr. Marin Luther King on how he should help rally other to stop being scared in stand up for their rights.
Since the beginning of american history there have been peaceful and non peaceful protests. These protests have had valuable effects on American society such as Martin Luther King Jr and Rosa Parks have impacted society greatly and for the better. In my opinion peaceful protests still have negative effects though they are immensely more appropriate than non peaceful protests because peaceful protests often turn violent because people don't know how to act for example Trump Protests.
People have the rights to freely protest peacefully, if they feel as though the government is not being just to them can be seen as a form of Social Movement. The problem comes in when the Acting crowds, protest turns into an aggravating riot, causing harm to other people and their property. It not only draws away from what they are fighting for, but it gets more attention, globally especially the negative aspects when media runs with it. I came across an article where the President of the United States, talks about the "criminals and thugs who tore up" the city of Baltimore on Monday night, after rioting and looting paralyzed the city and overwhelmed local officials”. He also mention that the media, play a major part, because they do not react
By the 1970s, most Americans had absorbed the cultural values of the 1960s, transforming radical ideas of personal liberation into mainstream values. In the 1970s, it was once observed that “there were hardly any hippies because everyone was a hippie”. Staples of the 1960s protest culture, such as long hair and casual dress gained mainstream acceptance during the 1970s. In clothing fashion bell-bottom pants, polyester leisure suits in wide pointy collars reflected a rebellion against the formality of an older generation. Another twist to the fashion Rebellion was that many Americans turned to clothes made from natural fabrics such as Cotton, gauze blouses, and dresses.
Protests riots in the United States has proven to an issue for both the country’s financial strength and the unity of the nation. With the presence of social injustices, combined with the increased impact of social media propaganda, protests riots are beginning to reach an all time high. Protest riots destroy individual communities and businesses, jeopardizes the safety of others and taints the protest’s cause by resorting to civil disobedience. Action must be done in order to prevent these random acts of violence from continuing after every social hot topic. The goal is not to prevent citizens from protesting; in fact, this should be encouraged. The goal is to change the way the protests are handled from both the citizens and authority perspectives, in order to prevent these protests from escalating into something dangerous.
Protesting unjust ideals and unjust treatments has been a part of world history since the first humans walked the Earth. Many people would say that the majority of these protests have bettered the human race and the future of all people. The text, “Waiting for Dan”, takes place in the Civil Rights Movement, where many people were protesting against segregation. The text, “A Letter Home” takes place after a protest against the Vietnam War leads to bloodshed. Although these protests are taking place for different reasons, they can be seen as similar. Then again, they are also drastically different.
Circumstances pertaining to endangerment may permit one to disobey the law. If someones going 40 MPH in a 55 MPH speed limit zone I believe that it should be allowed to break the law and pass them. Thats just an example of a minor law, this idea gets more controversial when it comes to bigger more serious laws like fighting back if someone starts to attack you, you are assaulting someone but at the same time you are defending yourself. Some may think disobeying the law is always a bad idea but there are definitely circumstances that are acceptable to break the law
One similarity between the handling of problems across the generations relates to protesting. An example of a current protest is Charlotte. In Charlotte 2016, the protesters blocked off streets they also set cars on fire as a response of the death of Keith Scott. Another example is the Trayvon Martin trail in Florida.
August 9, 2014 became a day we will remember forever. A police officer in Ferguson, Missouri shot Michael Brown, 18 years old, six times. However, this was the least of the city’s concerns. According to Noah C. Rothman’s editorial, “Taking Sides in Ferguson,” the mass media had an enormous effect on the events that occurred after the horrendous shooting.
Crowd action was a common form of protest because the British could not do much when the colonists banded together in large groups because it was hard to control them.
Protests and demonstrations for various incidents and verdicts will continue to be the voice of the public. Unfortunately, they aren’t going anywhere. Usually, it is in response to a particular incident demanding termination, prosecution, letter of resignation, etc. of those involved. Likewise, there could be a reaction to a decision that was made to prosecute or not prosecute. With these demonstrations and protests, law enforcement needs to be trained appropriately to de-escalate or to let them protest if it's nonviolent. As well, you need to ensure that you have an identified person within the department to make sure that the action plan is in place but more importantly they are trained effectively to crowd control methods.
