Defining Beauty Every year, millions of dollars are spent by women on various cosmetic surgical procedures. This type of surgery can sometimes require months of painful recovery, and a lot of pain killers. After learning this statistic, one might ask why they are spending so much money on plastic surgery to alter their bodies. Also a posing question could be, why are woman so willing to inflict pain on themselves to be “beautiful?” Although there may be other contributing factors, one of the main reasons behind this is that society has put so much pressure on portraying the idea of having a “perfect body” rather than embracing the one women have been naturally given. In Beyoncé’s video, “Pretty Hurts” directed by Melina Matsoukas, she addresses this problem by revealing what women put themselves through in order to be happy and beautiful according to the standards set by society. Superstar, Beyoncé Knowles’ self-entitled visual album, Beyoncé focuses on finding beauty in imperfection. She includes songs such as “Flawless” and “Bow Down” along with the first one on the album being “Pretty Hurts” to show the effects of society’s views on women.
