What is the importance of effective communication in coaching?
Communication is the cornerstone of coaching; and effective communication is the primary prerequisite of effective coaching. Even if the coach and person being coached speak completely different languages, the coaching relationship can be built on nonverbal communication. Communication engenders trust, and allows the coach to transmit knowledge, ideas, and emotions to the mentee. As Burton & Raedeke (n.d.) point out, "As a coach, you can say a lot without uttering a word: A frown, a look of disbelief, a disgusted shake of your head, or a smile can communicate quite a bit." Some coaches might not know how much of an impact their nonverbal communication styles make on those they are trying to help. Therefore, mastery of nonverbal and verbal communication skills becomes the most critical component of an effective, successful coaching relationship.
There are no rights and wrongs to effective communication in a coaching context. This is because every coach, and every individual being coached, "has his or her own style" of communication ("Coaching Communication Style: Verbal," n.d.). Likewise, each individual being coached will also have a specific communication style. No two coaches, and no two coaching relationships, will express themselves in the same way.
