Prichard and Newcomb’s (2015) study of the use of essential oils to reduce anxiety and depression to family members of critically ill patients uses an applied research approach. Applied research “includes scientific investigations conducted to generate knowledge that will directly influence or improve clinical practice” (Grove, Gray, & Burns, 2015, p.35). In contrast, basic research “is to generate and refine theory; thus the findings frequently are not directly useful in practice” (Grove et al., 2015, p.35).
