Therefore, the essay will focus on the research question: “What effects do love and money have on the authors’ portrayal of the main female characters in the novels The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen?” This essay will begin by discussing the time periods in which each of the novels, Pride and Prejudice and The Great Gatsby, take place. This will provide information on the roles of women in each of the designated time periods that the two novels revolve around.
