Introduction ------------

An Inspector Calls is a play that was written in 1946 but was set in 1912. The play is written about the Birlings, they are a middle class family. Mr. Birling is a successful businessman. The play shows differences between capitalists and socialists. Mr. Birling was a capitalist that thinks everyone should take care of themselves and that rich should not have to take care of the poor. The play criticizes capitalists like the Birlings who think that everybody has their place in life. Mr. Birling predicts in the play that the world would progress and there wouldn't be war. The audience knows is wrong

The entrance of the inspector altered the mood because until he came the scene was happy and the family was enjoying an engagement party. When the inspector entered the mood became darker .It allowed the play to progress because until then the family were enjoying themselves, the inspector's entrance took the play in its real direction because that is when the questioning of the Birlings started. The inspector entrance created dramatic tension. It connected with what had just happened because Birling had been talking about how he needed to stay out of trouble if he was going to be knighted. "All we need to do is stay out of trouble"

The exit of Eric altered the mood because when he left the inspector said, "if he doesn't come back I will have to find him" this made the mood more sinister because you are left wondering what did he did and what is going to happen next. It changed the play because it seemed something serious was happening and you are left wondering what is going to happen to Eric. It connected with what had just happened because the inspector starts asking where he is and he also starts a new line of questioning.
