Sondra Jenkins Pewter Grey-Prime Minister’s Powerful Better Half (Mini-case) Leadership and Change-MGT 4471 Dr. Hunter 24 October 2016 The Prime Minister’s Powerful Better Half After reading the min-case, The Prime Minister’s Powerful Better Half I would portray Ching as an authoritative leader. As stated by the textbook “influences can be defined as the change in a target agent’s attitudes, values, beliefs, or behavior as the result of influence tactics”. Influence tactics is a person’s actual behavior that is designed to change another person’s attitudes, beliefs, values or behaviors. The concept usually comes from the leader’s perspective. HO Ching is the CEO of Temasek with an outstanding education background, excellent working background as well as a personal background. Also, in my reading HO Ching expresses her abilities to change the behaviors of staff in ‘humble roots’. She has the commitment and the determination to build an effective enterprise. …show more content…
(Merriam-Webster) We must remember in any organization leaders and followers use different way to influence each other attitudes. According to the textbook the tactics range from emotional appeals, to the exchange of favors, to threat. According to HO Ching speech she used tactics that influenced others by inspiring and revitalizing them on why and how to agree with her supplication. She explained all of the advantages that would take place to the audience so they would decide to go along with her supplication by stating “If Asia continues to work hard and work smart, honing her competitive strengths and leveraging on her complementary capabilities across borders, the outlook in the next decade or two look very promising indeed.” (Hughes, Ginnet, & Curphy,
Canada’s parliamentary system is designed to preclude the formation of absolute power. Critics and followers of Canadian politics argue that the Prime Minister of Canada stands alone from the rest of the government. The powers vested in the prime minister, along with the persistent media attention given to the position, reinforce the Prime Minister of Canada’s superior role both in the House of Commons and in the public. The result has led to concerns regarding the power of the prime minister. Hugh Mellon argues that the prime minister of Canada is indeed too powerful. Mellon refers to the prime minister’s control over Canada a prime-ministerial government, where the prime minister encounters few constraints on the usage of his powers.
The prime minister has a significant amount of power within the Canadian government. Some of the sources of the prime minister’s powers are the number of seats in the House of Commons he and his party has, his ability to give push/give priority to certain government agendas, and his ability to appoint different governmental positions. For a politician to hold the office of PM his party must hold the majority of the seats in the house; this means that by convention his party must be in solidarity with his decisions, which gives the PM’s the loyal support of his party. Another power of the PM is the ability to put forward government agendas that they believe should be prioritized. The PM also has the ability to appoint people who they believe
Leary isolated Chung from the beginning by having him solely manage the Taiwanese market. Instead, Leary should have involved other employees to work on a team with Chung to help develop new business with the Taiwanese market. By building team collaboration, Leary would have helped Chung assimilate into the organization’s culture and feel a part of the team.
* She was replaced by John Major who brought back cabinet and collective decision-making. However the cabinet proved to be an obstacle in the way of Major’s attempts to improve our democracy.
Paul Well’s book The Longer I’m Prime Minster shows that while Stephen Harper was an effective political leader in the beginning of his political career towards the latter part of his career Harper’s leadership began to falter. Harper was not a popular or likeable leader, but nevertheless during his time as leader of the Conservative Party and eventually when he was prime minister of Canada for ten years he displayed strong leadership skills. While he was prime minster Harper’s leadership was evident he overcome multiple minority governments, he was able to fight off a coalition between his opponents, he led Canada through the economic recession in 2008 and in 2011 after gaining valuable campaign experience he was able to lead the Conservative
Throughout human existence, civilizations have risen and fallen, but one thing remains the same human resilience and survival. Humans have adapted when times are easy and when times are tough and unclear. Out of hard times, new ideas and inventions are created. It seems in the modern world, humans are more suicidal and lack grit. In the case of Mr. Harper and Mrs. Harper, Mrs Harper could not deal with painful cancer, so Mr. Harper assisted in euthanasia. It was wrong of Mr. Harper to help kill his wife because both showed a lack of emotional control, intellectual thinking, and good character according to Aristotle’s ethics.
In his article, Good Leaders Are Willing to Change Their Minds, Todd Henry emphasizes that a vital trait of a leader is learning to change perspectives. He reveals, within the article, that learning is the motive to “seek the truth.” Unfortunately, individuals are hindered from pursuing such truths due to fear and occasionally having a high ego. As Henry states, if one doesn’t “open [him/herself] to the idea that he or she doesn’t know everything,” it is impossible to think or act innovatively. In a larger context, it is impossible to be oneself. However, there is an extent to which one can change his or her viewpoint. Although Henry implies that the ability to change a perspective is due to the advance “understanding of a topic,”, if the perspective
One of the most powerful and influential members of the Canadian government is the Prime Minster of Canada. It has been stated that the Prime Minister of Canada has far more power within the Canadian system of government than the President of America has in the American System (Caron, 2017). This excess power the Prime Minister has when compared to the President of American shows the difference ranges of power top leaders can have in their specific country. However, is the amount of power the Prime Minister has in Canada too much?
Ho Ching is an influential leader based on the reading materials. She is an influential leader because she is the wife of Singapore’s Prime minister. Meaning she has the ear of one of the nation’s most powerful men on a day to day basis. Ho Ching and her husband are involved in forceful debates because they do not always agree on subject matters. By engaging in these debates, she tries to influence her husband’s view. Ho Ching is also influential because of her position as the CEO of Temasek Holdings where she manages a portfolio of approximately 50 billion dollars. She attained this position through influence increased from education, experience and in part through family networks. Ho Ching has the power to influence numerous markets throughout Asia as the CEO of a powerful holding firm.
A transformational leader is one who strongly motivates their followers and uses the current conflicts to help them build their connection with, and support from, their followers. Using current events to relate to followers shows that the leader cares for the followers, shares their concerns, and is willing to help. Martin Luther King Jr. used the civil rights movement to connect with his followers, partially because the movement affected him, but largely because it affected millions of others like him. By establishing this connection with his followers, he was able to motivate them to act. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus.”(Schladweiler) With this statement, Dr. King was publicly stating that leaders do not try and join movements, but rather, motivate
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
“The greater a leader’s skill at transmitting emotions, the more forcefully the emotions will spread. Such transmission does not depend on theatrics, of course, since people place close attention to a leader, even subtle expressions of emotion can have great impact” (Goleman, et. al, 2002, para. 3). As her company grew and she hired employees her leadership began displaying “supportive behavior” as well. She was a compassionate leader who would “show concern for the well being and needs of her employees”.2. When describing her leader ship style Wang stated “I try to share a tremendous amount with my staffers. I feel everything: the tribulations of business, the responsibility to people who depend on me to feed their families. Those things are always in my decision-making processes.”
The pay that he compensated to his workers is less than the actual rate. This shows that Sir Li Ka-Shing is an autocratic leader. Autocratic leaders expect obedience, not understanding and input from their staff or followers. Under autocratic style, leader is the maximum ruler that they make decisions without seeking any opinion. Sir Li Ka-Shing autocratic action is inappropriate and this will eventually create fear and low employee morale. Therefore, to apply autocratic leadership style in an appropriate way, Sir Li Ka-Shing should listen to his employees and take their complaints into considerations. This will lead to the employees to remain loyal towards Sir Li
This authority rests on the appeal of the leader. At the same time this form of authority has its own drawbacks. It is unstable and it deteriorates if the leader is unable to bring about the changes he promised to bring. This is what we concluded from the case study by Rakesh Khurana as well. John McCoy, the CEO of Bank One was a very charismatic leader. He brought about a huge change in the Bank's financial and economic position. His attitude helped the bank to expand and take over First Chicago. But as and when McCoy's attitude changed, people saw a change in the services of Bank One which had started faltering. His laid-back attitude finally led to his removal from the post of CEO by his own board of members.
