Prince Henry the Navigator Duke of Viseu Lord of Covilha or Prince Henry the Navigator was the son of King John I and Philippa of Lancaster. Born March 4, 1394, Porto, Portugal. Henry had nine siblings. His brothers, Edward King of Portugal, Ferdinand the Holy Prince, Peter Duke of Coimbra, John Constable of Portugal, Afonso I Duke of Braganza, and his sisters, Beatrice Countess of Arundel, Branca de John I of Portugal, Blanche, and Isabella of Portugal Duchess of Burgundy. Being third son of King John I, Henry was to stay prince forever and never king. No one knows much about Henry’s childhood, but what people do know is that Philippa of Lancaster taught Henry and his siblings with high standards for their education. (¨Prince Henry the Navigator¨).
After reading Machiavelli’s The Prince and watching Shakespeare’s Henry V in class, one begins to notice similarities between the authors’ idea of what a “perfect king” should be. The patterns between the ideal ruler of Shakespeare and the ideal ruler of Machiavelli can be seen in numerous instances throughout this story. For the duration of this essay, I will compare the similarities in both pieces to give the reader a better understanding of how Shakespeare devised his view of what a “perfect king” should be.

What makes a king an effective king? Is it how long they rule? No, it is actually the way in which they interact with their subjects. The way they are able to separate the personal from the political, not allowing personal feelings to interfere with his ruling. King Henry the 5th is a perfect example of this. Henry’s royal justices would visit every region within his domain to ensure that those who committed crimes against the “king’s peace” (arson, murder, rape) were arrested and brought to trial. Though Henry couldn’t be in all places at once, through his traveling courts, he made certain that his authority was felt throughout his kingdom.
