Priorities for career success: the in look on Surgical Technologists
Imagine waking up from kidney surgery only to realize that there are stitches not only on your stomach, but also on your chest. Imagine the doctor coming up and having to explain to you that his surgical tech got a weak stomach and with scalpel in-hand, fell and put a puncture wound large enough for stitches on your chest. You would be shocked at the severe lack of professionalism by the surgical technologist, and you would question the hospitals inequity.
Surgical technologists, not only are skilled helpers, but the life of the operating room. If one is too tense during the surgery, it can cause everyone else to be as well, therefore they must remain calm to make sure

He or she maintains the operating room, sterilizes equipment, and prepares patients for their procedures. A surgical technologist, who may also be called a surgical or operating room technician or a scrub tech, sterilizes equipment and hands surgeon’s instruments upon their request.” (Dawn Rosenberg McKay). But before even considering becoming a surgical technologist, one must have nerves of steel, must be reliable/ dedicated, and must be able to adapt to any environment they encounter as a surgical technologist.
The first rule of becoming a surgical technologist is to have nerves of steel, not actually steel, but close. One of the best things a surgical technician can do is stay cool in the operating room, and not getting overwhelmed at all the unpleasant things in sight. According to Nicole Gumke, a surgical technologist, “You need to remain calm in the operating room.” “When you are tense, everyone else in the room becomes tense too.” (Will Erstad).
Being a surge tech also calls for a steady hand while handing the tools to the surgeon who is operating. Just because one is not performing the surgery does not mean they will not be standing at the doctor’s side. This means one will have an eye view at settings that one may not see every day. From seeing intestines, livers, bones, brains, and much more, one will always be at a close distance. Being at a close distance should not freak or upset one. This is part of the job when becoming a surgical technologist. Things
Upon observation of the circulating nurse, I noticed that she was very interactive and involved in the surgery. One of the responsibilities of the circulating nurse is to retrieve any surgical supplies that are not available in the operating room and to make or receive any calls for the surgeon. During the surgery, I noticed the nurse call for an x-ray for the surgeon, the laboratory for biopsy samples, and the operating room floor front desk to inform them that the surgery would be later than expected. This is her responsibility as the surgeon cannot break sterility by touching the phone and it is easier for him to communicate through her and not leave the surgical site. Also in the operating room, I observed the scrub nurses’ roles. Before the operation, the scrub nurse opened all of the sterile packages, arranged them on the sterile field, and took count of what was there along with the circulating nurse. The scrub nurse did this because she is sterile during the entire procedure, and once the sterile packs are opened, the contents can only be handled by sterile personnel. The scrub nurse also was ready and waiting at the sterile field at all times to get the surgeon any equipment needed from the sterile field. This is helpful to the surgeon because it enables the surgeon to stay at the surgical site and convenient for when
Becoming a surgical technologist require a lot of dedication and tolerance, whether it's standing on your feet for hours or just simply preparing a patient for surgery. A surgical technologist is a person who helps to prepare an operating room by setting up sterile surgical instruments, equipment and supplies, such as drapes, gowns, gloves, suction tubing, and receiving solutions and medications from a circulator (jeff.org) Surgical technologist also ensure all technology used in the operating room is working properly. Although all of these jobs are very important, the most important job would be assisting the surgeon during their surgeries. Surgeries could last up to eight hours, (explorehealthcareers.org). That's
This paper will explore the role of the surgical technologist as the first scrub. It will discuss the education and training needed for this profession. Furthermore, the paper will look at the career advancement and opportunities to specialize that the surgical technologist can explore with more schooling and experience. There are different work environments available for this occupation and I will mention a few of them. Equally as important, I will examine some of the different surgical specialties and give examples of operating procedures that the surgical technologist will use to help the surgical team perform the operations. I was able to find the information contained in this paper using two publications found on the Internet
You are responsible for making sure the operating room is set up the way the surgeon likes and needs it to be. You are also responsible for making sure that all the tools, operating table, and every inch of the room is cleaned and sterilized. Surgical technicians are the ones who keep track of “lap pads” or laparotomy pads used during surgery to soak up excess fluid in the patient. So, everything must be accounted for before, during and after surgery. They are also the people who hand the surgeons the tools they call out. With all responsibility, you have to know how to think for yourself if something were to happen and the surgeon takes a second to think during a tricky or time consuming surgery. For example, if a lap pad were to go missing, the surgical technician will be the one who is asked about it, and needed to recall the location of pad. Or the surgical technician has to make sure enough tools are at hand in the operating room readily available in case the team happens to run out. The job is very simple. Clean and move the room according to surgery and surgeon, keep track of everything, and hand the right tools when called out quickly. Seems simple. Which is why there is more than one surgical technician in the operating room. Natalie explained that she is ready and looking forward to the high stress environment that comes along with the job.
Surgical Technologists have an important role in the operation room (OR). There are different positions within the Surgical Technology field, including Scrub Surgical Technologist, Circulating Surgical Technologist, and Second Assisting Technologist. Scrub Surgical Technologists have a number of tasks, including prepping the patient for surgery, sterilizing the OR, gown and glove surgeons and assistants, and assists the surgeon and other surgical team members in a number of ways, such as passing instruments and dressing wounds. Circulating Surgical Technologists have a number of tasks as well, including checking patient’s charts, identifying patient and verifying the surgery that will be performed with consent forms, assisting anesthesia
I became interested in being a surgical technician when I was younger because that is the job my mom had done while I was growing up. Despite the long, gruesome hours, I believe being a scrub tech is a very engrossing job that would keep me on my toes every day. Also, surgical technicians have a long list of tasks they must do such as preparing the operating room with all the tools and instruments the surgeons require in order to perform the procedure and making sure the instruments are sterile and clean. They prep the patients for surgery by calming them down, observing the vitals, washing and or shaving incision sites, positioning them on the operating table and sterilizing the area designated for incision. As well as constructing solutions and medication that will be used in surgery and double check to ensure that all the machinery is working properly. During surgery, surgical technicians are the ones handing the sterile supplies
Any person pursuing a career in the medical field should understand there in an unpredictability of hours. Since anesthesiologists are usually needed before surgery, emergency surgeries would put the predictability of the job on the lower side (“American Society of Anesthesiologists - FAQs”). Also there a massive amount of pressure that comes with this job (“American Society of Anesthesiologists - FAQs”). The anesthesiologist should be focused at all times and have all their concentration on the patient at hand because if there are distractions around, the anesthesiologist can easily confuse one patient’s information with other patients’ information. This could mean giving a patient too much or too little anesthesia which can cause many problems for a patient before, after, and during surgery. In addition anesthesiologists should always be courteous and sociable with the patient and families (“General Information on Anesthesiologists”). In most cases, at the hospital, the severity of a patient’s condition or the anxious atmosphere can cause visitors of the hospital to become nervous and worrisome. As an anesthesiologist, the duty is to comfort and put everyone’s nerves at ease in such a tense environment. Personally I believe I have these qualities since I am quite sociable and productive under pressure. Oddly enough, pressure motivates me to be more productive and determined to achieve my
As a member of the health care team, with the primary focus being on the treatment and care of the patient, the technologist will have interactions on a variety of levels. Initially, the process of interaction would begin with the physician providing either a documented or verbal order. Being accepted and addressed in a proficient manner with a focus towards accuracy and efficiency that is supported through due diligence from preparation and readiness. Followed by interaction with the patient in a calming and professional demeanor which would be reassuring for a patient under stress due to uncertainty or injury. Demonstrating a confident and professional manner which supports the overall focus of care of the patient. Enhancing and supporting
A quote stated by Todd Hofheins, CFO of Providence Regional Medical Center, “Hospital leadership may drive these types of visions and strategies, but ultimately you need the engagement of anesthesia to feed into how we move forward” (Driving). Surgeons and Anesthesiologists have to be one with each other in order to save lives. An anesthesiologist will put a patient down while the surgeon completes the operation. If either of these tasks is performed wrong, the patient’s life is at risk. A career in Anesthesiology provides assurance to a patient’s life and is a growing field due to the constant need for new physicians and surgeons.
The medical field has a variety of scenarios that require a specific person to do a job. One such job corresponds to the anesthesiologist. The physician anesthesiologist is responsible for the care of a patient going under surgery before, during, and post-surgery. They are in charge of the patient when they are marginally awake or fully unconscious and provide comfort if needed. They may work in different areas such as in the operating room, emergency room, dental offices, or anywhere a patient needs to be sedated. Anesthesiologist works with other doctors during procedures, this makes them needed and reliable, which is why job growth will increase in the years to come.
Being honest is one of the, if not the most important character traits a surgeon should possesses. And, the only way to learn honesty, is from literature. "Honesty inspires trust." (Packer 3). When patients, and coworkers, trust you they will be more relaxed, making your job easier. Honesty also lead to achievement in your surgical career. "Honesty, if we live by the rule of honesty...we can go down the road of achievement." (Tipton 2). Honesty will only help you. Once you are honest your life and career will be easier. Another example where honesty is the only option is in literature. "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" is a prime example of how lying gets you nowhere and once you lie to someone they will never
I feel that with experience and practice that any medical-surgical nurse can tackle any situation whether stopping fluid from leak out of an abdominal incision site to suctioning a tracheostomy patient. A nurse should address situation under pressure but remain calm and to be able to think of the next step.
“Do you want to live a surgeon’s lifestyle?” I asked myself. Growing up away from home since the age of 8, ingrained a sense of responsibility in me. This made me trust my abilities and take decision from the beginning. Starting a medical career raised several questions but I always knew “I want continue doing what I am good at for the rest of my life”. In my quest to deeply understand it, before scouting for options, I saw myself devoting hours in Operating rooms learning the intensity with which the surgeons work. The idea behind repairing a defect is expertise that involves an extensive base of knowledge and precision in skills. I figured that dexterity in my work was something that came naturally to me. I started enjoying that milieu and before I knew, I became passionate about operating meticulously, to act and see what makes it life-altering. So yes, with all sincerity, I want to thrive on being continuously involved in operating to fix a problem.
Therefore, nurses have an active role in improving safety by participating in the surgical
Apart from being one of most interesting settings in the nursing field, day surgery unwraps the full experience for nursing students to learn and also develop repetitive knowledge on what to expect before, during , and after each surgery, as well as the roles of each nurse within those parameters. Being inside the surgery room was an amazing experience because you get to see different operations performed by different health care professionals. Every surgeon does the sugary differently, meaning that same procedure is performed but adding or subtracting essential steps that makes each surgeon unique. Nurses also play an essential role in each surgery but their imperative duty is less than surgeons, but as equal
