On 08/16/2015 at approximately 9:30 AM, I Officer Ponce was assigned as the east side front lobby Officer, when I came in contact with Mr. Michael D. Gordon, DOB 09/07/1979, W/M, from 121-09 85th Avenue, Kew Gardens, NY 11415. Mr. Gordon arrived around the time the processing of inmates’ visitors stops due to count. Mr. Gordon demanded to be giving some “professional courtesy” and be processing in, due to the fact that his step father is a BOP instructor in Glynco, GA. I advised Mr. Gordon that there was nothing I could do, because the processing of visitors stopped already. Mr. Gordon became very irate, loud and stated “My stepfather train you guys and you can’t do that for me”. I stated “No”. At this time, Ms. Gordon asked Officer Martinez, who was assigned as east escort officer to inspect her diaper bag to see if she could bring the items in there. …show more content…
Gordon, I observed Mr. Gordon began to scream as he was walking toward Officer Martinez “What’s the problem? The baby food is seal and there are baby snacks inside the zip lock bag”. I got out of my chair due to Mr. Gordon’s aggressive behavior, Mr. Gordon looked and stated to me “You need to come down buddy, you don’t know who you are messing with, I will make a couple phone calls and you will be without a job”. At this time, I instructed Mr. and Ms. Gordon to leave the front and to return around 10:45 AM, which is usually around the time counts cleared. I informed the incident to Operations Lieutenant Lewars about the

On November 5, 2015 at approximately 1000 hours I took a jail tour of the Santa Cruz Correctional facility on Water Street, with Melinda Payne as my tour guide. There were a few things that stood out to me during the jail tour. First, I observed how clean and orderly the jail was. There were no bad odors and the walls, floors, and windows were well kept. Personally, I try to maintain a clean and organized workspace therefore the jail environment fit me well. Second, I noticed the overall size of facility. The jail is relatively small in size and was broken into different sections. Personally, I like this layout because I believe it allows for better communication to inmates and staff, better response to major incidents, and quick ability to
Andersonville Prison epitomized the ultimate crime against humanity. The atrocities that transpired in this confederate prison sparked reaction and outrage at the conclusion of the Civil War.
10 concentration camps… Imaging being brutally tortured, starved, and beaten in 10 different Nazi concentration camps 6 years straight for no reason, except for the fact that you are Jewish.
Upon arriving at Gander hill, I noticed the way the correctional officers thoroughly perform their security checks. Everyone including the staff that come into the facility had to pull out their pants pockets and lift up their pants leg. The inmates were dressed in all in white uniforms including their footwear. Multiple doors are not opened at the same time, one door opens at a time before you walk through another door. The first section of facilities held about 50 low risk inmates in what seems like an intervention class for mostly drug offenders or for those that need help with their substance abuse. In this particular class, those who graduate from the program are rewarded with microwave that they can personally use. The second section
On May 4 1920 at the school of Washington high they were preparing for their field trip to the Washington prison. The principal was trying to scare the kids so they don’t go to prison. They began the ride on the bus and talked the whole way, they finally go there and there were giant walls around the prison. All the kids wondered why they needed walls that high. Then a man named Jim walked out and smiled he said he was going to be giving them there tour.
On September 6, 2016 at 1943 hours, VA Police observed a white male Veteran attempting to open the main doors after they were secured for the night. VA Police made contact with the Veteran, who stated that his appointment ran late and he was trying to leave. VA police advised the Veteran that he was not allowed to open doors that were secured. VA Police escorted the Veteran to the Memorial Garden door and allowed him to leave without incident.
Rina Palta wrote in the article that private prisons now a day are owned by private company and are being use for profit. The target that she stated in the article is people of color. The more prisoners they have the more profit they can get, that why the prisons are trying to keep their prisoners. Their plan is to catch the young prisoners and use them as long as they can. First, the prisoners are not allowing to bring lawsuits. Second, the private prisons are not teaching their prisoners any social skills so that when the prisoners finish their sentence, they won’t know how to survive in social, and they will eventually come back to the prisons. This article is believable because the author is a reporter about crime and safety for KPCC. She has been spending a few years to report prisons, law enforcement agencies and criminals. I use this as the evident that the government let those private company using the prisoners of color to make profit.
Throughout the course of my work experience analyzing, verifying and composing reports, were a daily occurrence. As manager conducting interviews and verifying references to determine a potential new hire. Writing incident reports, gathering information and correlating it all to make a decision on what course action to take. Working in sales and customer service fields helped me establish a great techniques in dealing with a multitude of issues. In my current occupation as a Correctional Officer, I am in charge of inmates well being, facility protocols and policy adherence. Conduct searches of inmates, lockers and bunks. Maintain a daily log of performed scheduled and unscheduled activities. Report back to my Lieutenant, Sergeants and other
The overall belief of the Penitentiary was that most prisoners would benefit from the incarceration experience. The penitentiary concept would remove felony offenders from normal society, and through penitence, pastoral counseling, solitude, and reasonable discipline, antisocial behaviors would be corrected. However, the system became overcrowded; prisoners had to be doubled up in their cells, thus removing the concept of solitude. Allegations of abuse and brutality arose and by the end of the Civil War, the penitentiary’s population had grown to 1,117 prisoners (Siegel & Bartollas, 2011).
Healthcare is a big topic no matter how you view it, but when looking at it from the point of a person who is in prison, it takes on a whole new view. Those who are in prison have federal and state laws that say that the prisons must provide them with medical facilities for their healthcare needs. This paper will identify a governmental agency that regulates the healthcare that is provided to prisoners in an institution within the United States, along with the foundation of such an agency and who regulates the licenses, accreditation, certifications, and authorization for employment for those who work within one of these
The film, “Prison State” was extremely informative in the area of prison life that I knew little to nothing about. The film told a few stories of two children and two adults that were incarcerated and spent lengthy times in prison and juvenile detention centers. Therefore, the video focused on criminals, the type of norm violations that are legal norms. We see in the video the two children that were locked up were girls in their early teens who grew up in a community within Kentucky. We can see that once they get out of the correctional system, they are set to stay in this community for up to 6 months on probation. In this community, the norms were the same as most communities, but breaking the norms in this community had a larger punishment such as skipping school resulted in weeks in a correctional facility. In chapter six, “Deviance”, we learn that the deviance level varies within different cities, states, and even countries. The film discusses many theories throughout the chapter such as the Labeling theory, this means that each person in the film is given a discredited identity. A discredited identity is the identity you are given in your community.
In the State of Tennessee, community and political outrage are surrounding the state’s largest privately operated prison. The prison made headlines when an audit revealed that the facility was having problems with staffing, vacancies, and gang violence. The prison is the Trousdale Turner Correctional Center which is managed by CoreCivic who was previously known as Corrections Corporation of America. The audit depicts a company who is in noncompliance with the contract requirements. The facility is dealing with challenges in their departmental policies which has hindered the ability to oversee the private prison effectively. Tennessee Democratic is not favor of private prisons and is pushing for additional prison oversight upon the release of
Kozel (2005), first describes the school as if it was a prison. It contains a spiked fence that’s eight foot tall with windows that have thick screens. The shear size of the student body requires the school to utilize about forty portable classrooms. There are also also storage rooms that were converted into windowless classrooms. This would make conditions rather unsettling for students and teachers. Other problems exist like the lack of working toilets in the school, and the issue of rat problems, where droppings were found in the cafeteria. A prison seems to sound like a better facility than the school.
I’ve always been interested in working in a correctional facility; I love the challenge of working with difficult people and using my knowledge in psychology to figure them out. I know from my dealings with inmates in the past in the clinic they love to try to manipulate things and you to get what they want. My challenge to myself was to try to figure out their lies and report them to the Doctor I worked with, I loved the puzzle of it. My other goal was to help them and use my nursing skills to the best of my ability to provide them with the best nursing care I could. My expectations for my clinical were a little influenced by watching Shawshank Redemption in what I was going to see in a real prison facility. I am expecting to see the inmates locked up behind bars most of the day and only let out for meals, and rec time, possibly for some work also. I am also expecting to learn from the experienced nursing staff how to deal with and take care of these inmates that are out to manipulate you and the situation they are in. I am worried about having to assess the inmates in segregation and how to deal with and manage them since there is a reason they are in segregation. I have these visions of an out of control inmate that is in need of medical care and how we are going to manage that. I am also worried about being in lock down and being attacked by an out of control inmate. I may be worried about these issues but I am also away that this is a job I am very interested
