High school administrations care about the well being of their students. They aim to guide the students in a way that will prepare them for the future ahead of each student. Thus administrations of high school have certain requirements that students must finish before graduating. There is one requirement that is commonly debated by high school administration and students, this topic being community service. Community service should not be required in order to graduate from high school since forcing students to volunteer leads to false information on their records, forcing students to do so does not mean that they will continue doing community service after they graduate, and it does not mean the student will mature.
In "Serve or Fail," Dave Eggers argues that college should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation. Eggers gives us some purpose of college education to link with volunteering that help students getting beneficial effects. He gave some good points in terms of helping others out. He explains that college is too short to sit back and become the best foosball player and waste your time with no commitments to any after school obligations, etc. I think that everyone should be able to give some of their time to volunteer and put a smile on someone's face because they think that you care. I find Dave Eggers writing “Serve or Fail” very persuasive for the following reasons.
Should community service be a requirement to graduate high school ? While many high schools have made it mandatory to complete a certain amount of community service hours, many high schools don’t find it necessary and put it as optional. Students may find it as absurd or completely unnecessary to complete their community service hours while others find it rewarding. In my opinion, I don’t believe having a certain amount of community service hours should be a requirement to graduate high school.
requirements can lead to wanting to do other things after high school. There are community
When applying for a position at a job, managers always check to see how much experience you have in order to check if you are qualified. When filling out a college application there are always questions that ask to write down any extra curricular activities you participated in or any clubs/service work you did and for how long. It is important to be a part of the community and to be dedicated to one or two locations for a certain amount of time to show commitment and effort. A student that has been a part of an organization for about three months and has not missed will be prefered at a college than a student that goes five times a month. Community service does not only help build relationships but allows students to spend their time learning new skills and it will benefit them in the future. Community service for high school seniors should be mandatory because it will teach the students how to be responsible, allow them to explore in depth something related to their career and improve their communication skills.
One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Going to college is not the best choice for every high school graduate because many students cannot handle college, colleges’ lower standards, and not all jobs require a college degree.
All through high school one always wonders why certain courses have to be taken. Thinking certain courses are a waste of one’s time and how it takes 12 years just to receive a diploma. Sounds crazy to think half of one’s life is spent in school preparing to receive a better understanding of education. During graduation, walking through the stage makes one along other proud and accomplished of all the efforts that took place. This not only helps one become more educated and aware of the things going around them, but helps become financially stable with a job or other necessities in life. Therefore, high school should be mandatory for students at least till there are 18, and not to drop-out.
Community service is about helping people who are in need. we should pick if we want to help, not be forced to do it because we need it to graduate. That is not the point of helping people. Community service takes a lot of time. Students already have to much to do. Community service will take time away form more important things. Although some people have argued that community service should be required, closer examination will show that it should be the students choice and students all ready have enough things to do. High schools should not require community service to graduate.
Do you know any person who just graduated high school and that person does not want to go to college? Many students today make a decision that can change the outcome of their life. By deciding whether to go to college or not? Many high school students don’t want to further their studies because they do not want to be locked up in a small classroom and they just want to start their lives with small jobs they can. What high school students do not know is that going to college can change their lifestyle of living. This is a best thing a student should do to get success because a high school education is good to have but it is not going to get students certain job opportunities. Community colleges give a chance to everyone who wants to follow their dreams to do something. Additionally, the doors are open to everybody with even a low-income person
High school graduation marks the start of young adults’ lives, a time where they are expected to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Many young adults are pressured into attending college, whether they have determined their goal or not, but is it necessary? “The Case Against College,” an article written by Linda Lee, a mother who has questioned the former belief that college equals success, claims that “not everyone needs a higher education.” College, though beneficial to many, is not for everyone and should not determine an individual’s life.
Furthermore, the author acknowledges that the service requirement won’t be fit everywhere. He says It wouldn’t be practical for community college students who generally have considerable family and work demands. Egger’s says although you would exempt community college students there would still be millions of able-bodied young people. He suggests that modest hours can make a huge impact. He gives an example of the flexibility colleges could have with students so they don’t feel so burdened, he proposes the college gives them credit for their service. Furthermore, the author creates another way a college can make it possible on a student. Dave Egger’s implies that colleges could limit their service requirement to their junior year, when a student
Some people believe that requiring students to volunteer in order to receive their high school diploma defeats the purpose of volunteering. They believe that it would cheapen the work that the students are doing. They believe that the students would not put the required effort into the volunteer work. However, once the students start volunteering, they will forget that they are required to. The students will be proud and have a feeling of accomplishment in the work they are doing and put effort into volunteering in the community. Therefore, students should have to do volunteer work to receive their
It can also be helpful for students to meet community needs. As it is stated in article “What is College For?” by Joseph R. Urgo who is the President of St. Mary's College of Maryland, “College is for students to decide what and how they want to contribute to society, to the economy, to their communities and to the well-being of their families”. Saint Cloud State University provides the opportunity to volunteer through different organizations. In these organizations, volunteer students are supposed to help in arranging and organizing specific organization’s cultural nights. In these cultural nights students also get chance to know each other and learn how to help each other. For example, I was helping the Pakistan Student Association in organizing
Joanne- Levy-Prewitt’s belief that public services are necessary for college is an optimistic point of view and is really useful. In her column “College Bound: A Weekly Guide to Higher Education” she discuss on why public services is required in schools for College when she spoke to Yates a CEO of California Wellness Foundation, he states it would “..reduce teen crime and improve their wellness.” Joanne believes it will help colleges choose more responsible and mature young adults but is concerned on how requiring community service would affect the work force and GDP of the economy. "What will happen to our economic workforce if all young adults go into public service between high school and college or work?" Joanne uses an analytical and
In Maryland, 75 hours of community service are required for students to graduate. Getting in the way of many after school activities, students should not be required to have community service hours to get a diploma.
