Problems With Bullying

Bullying should be dealt with more seriously. I feel this way because it’s a huge problem throughout the public school system and online. Bullying can have serious effects on an individual. The saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me” (Robert Fulghum) isn’t true, words hurt. Despite all efforts to stop bullying, it continues to be a big problem all over the world. If you look up the definition of bullying according to Marriam- Webster it says bullying is “to treat someone in a cruel, insulting, threatening, or aggressive fashion.” According to a UCLA psychology study, 20 percent of teens grades 9-12 have reported being bullied and that’s not including the people who haven’t spoke out about being bullied. Seventy-seven percent of students in public schools have been bullied at least once through kindergarten- 12th grade, also shown in a study by UCLA. All of this proves what we are doing to discipline bullying is not enough to stop it.

The number one reason bullying should be dealt with more seriously is because teens and other individuals have taken their own lives because they felt they weren’t wanted anymore or that they couldn’t live with the humility of something put out there by a bully. Their self- esteem gets ripped apart so much that eventually they feel they are not good enough to be alive and for those who don’t have suicidal thoughts, they carry the burden of being told they aren’t good enough and most believe it.
