In the past, some children were too poor to go to school. Today, it is the law to go to school. Because students get bored of the topic, they sometimes tune out the teacher, get distracted, and/or socialize instead of paying attention in class. Because of this, students are lacking in critical thinking. Students also lack in science content knowledge. Over time, the American Education system has evolved because of ineffective actions, causing the students to lose or forget skills, making them not ready for college or a job.
Most children were taught at home. There were not very many schools in 1774, in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania. Parents taught their children to read and write using a hornbook, which is the alphabet, the Lord’s prayer,

Schools are trying to raise their budgets. Budgets are not really the problem, however. The problem is the educational system. The human brain has evolved to solve problems, survive, and learn while moving, according to Medina. There are many facts about the brain that can contradict a lot of things we do in the educational system. For example, we learn best through pictures, and not words or writing. Humans have a 10-minute attention span until they get bored and tune it out. Also, when students receive large homework assignments, they find themselves staying up to work on them. This is unhealthy, since this causes the students to lose sleep, making them tired in class and not pay attention. Schools used to just teach reading, grammar, and mathematics. But there are more things to teach now. There are also new teaching methods, such as oral, visual, verbal, etc. Some schools cut out music and art, which prevents the student from being creative and developing. This can cause problems and make parents move kids to home school. Education is constantly changing, and schools and trying hard to teach students better. The American Education System has made big changes over the years, but those changes have also caused …show more content…
Approximately 1.7 million students took a ACT college entrance test. The test focused on english, math, science, and reading. However, most students that took the test are not prepared for college or a job. English remained the same for the last five years, but math and science do not stick as well. High school does not provide students with enough information to go into a career. Approximately 40% of high school graduates are not prepared for college or a job. Most low-income schools do not have good curriculum. Students usually leave school lacking information. This is because of budgets, lack of sleep, etc. Students do not have all of the information they should when they leave school, and they are usually not prepared for college or a
America used to thrive on its education system and that is why it became one of the greatest nations in the world. Education is the backbone of our country, and we must give high priority to improve its current condition. Unfortunately, in the past couple of decades, the education system has been regressing. It has been on the decline and not as effective. The quality of education in a country has an influence on GDP growth, social cohesion and social well being in general. In order to improve the quality of education in the U.S., the following must be taken into consideration: the structure of our education system must be reanalyzed, we must compare and contrast our education system to systems of other countries with higher rankings, and finally, there must be a solution.
The American College Testing (ACT), 2010 concluded that a large number of high school students and high school graduates do not possess the knowledge and skills for college level work or career training. With the creation and implementation of common core standards, states and school districts have a clear set of student expectations to target
There was a time when America’s education system was top-notch according to the culture and society. With time, a myriad of things has changed, but unfortunately what has not evolved is the American education system. The country is still following a system which was not designed for the current global economic climate. Equality, as positive as it sounds is not as sufficient when it comes to education. The system treats students equally yet expect a similar culmination and outcome. Every child has his individuality and distinct abilities; one cannot judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree. Conversely, a few of the prominent reasons why the education system is failing are overcrowded schools, the rise of technology, and following the same old school hours.
Our educational culture only satisfies a select group of students who are at the top and leaves others behind. These book smart kids deserve to go where they are going, however, what happens to the kids who are not as book smart as others? Many students are having a hard time because they are not book smart even if they may be good at something that is not educational. As stated in Jack Schneider’s article, America’s Not-So-Broken Education System, “The education system simply stopped working. It aged, declined, and broke, but we can fix it by first ripping it apart” (Schneider Par 2). As of now, the education system is very unsupportive of some students and teachers. Backed by the government, public school pay does not support teachers in America while in other countries, being an educator is considered a privilege. By not supporting teachers, it is hard to find educators who are willing to put in the work to help their students. As a result of not having good teachers who are motivated to teach their students, it is also likely that the students that they end up having to teach are also unmotivated as well. In this cycle, some teachers and students gain practically nothing from going to school, which demonstrates the broken education system that we have at this time. The ever aging education system is not up to date with either
Education is a necessity across the globe, from America to Africa to China. Some education systems, however, are more successful than others and hold differing views and approaches to education. Culture greatly impacts education, which in turn impacts further opportunity. As unfair as it may be, a child’s cultural background largely determines their level of success. The American education system is lacking when compared to various other world cultures, and this is causing the socioeconomic gap to grow. Because of this inadequate education, more and more families are dipping beneath the poverty line. This could be due to poor discipline as well as the diversity of students. The diversity of the students results in a wide array of needs that are not being met by the public education system. This issue could be minimized by working to create a more inclusive academic environment to ensure equality and success.
In today’s society students aren’t pushed in high school to pursue their full potential, which makes students think they don’t need to put hard work into school making them lazy. The outcome of this is bad grades and upset parents making them believe they aren’t smart and that is why they are getting the grades they are receiving. In actuality these students aren’t being pushed and the teachers aren’t tapping into their talents to show them the full academic potential they have.
The United States of America used to be known as one of the greatest countries to be apart of. From the jobs to the economy to education people loved to be apart of the American culture. The problem many Americans are facing today is poor education. Since America is viewed as a high profile country many people have prominent expectations on what they are receiving, specifically the education. The fact is that there are major problems with all levels of the education system today. Starting with early education, teachers are quick to say children needs to be medicated or put into special education. Proceeding to the general or high school education where kids are graduating but not prepared for what’s after. Lastly how higher education or college can hardly be afforded in today’s society. As a result of the failing education system, many parents blame the child or society when in actuality the failing system is corrupted by some teachers, lack of preparation, and lack of affordability in higher education.
What is it that’s making our country suffer from excelling in education? Very few would argue about the importance of our education system today. Issues such as lazy teachers, lack of parent involvement, and teaching useless information in class may hinder progress in today’s education system. An education plays a crucial role and is an essential tool, unfortunately, with all the jaded judgments; our students are not able to value their education. A proper education can open the doors to many opportunities that would have never been possible if it had not been for the knowledge and preparation that one received while in school. With the growing economy and desperate times, it is more important than ever for our country’s children to receive the proper education and training that is needed to allow them to acquire a good job and produce the revenue needed to live. Today's education system is flawed in many ways, and these flaws should be eliminated to ensure a good education for our future generation.
Education plays important role in society. It determines the final development of an adult’s personality. In today’s society most jobs require a University degree. To receive a University degree students need to rely on a good education system. Does America provide this? The American education system has relied on the grade point average system for a long time. The problem with this is there is not a universal GPA grade point system varying from course to course. This creates an inaccurate way to determine ones overall achievements. Teachers have different standards than others, grade inflation can occur and students can be exposed to different learning environments. Does the education system need to change to create fairness?
The American education system has many flaws. It is becoming more and more ineffective. To society, school is a competition especially in colleges and universities. People care so much about the grade they get that they forget the real reason why we even go to school; to learn. All everyone cares about is the grade that we receive. It has become so bad that we have lost sight in what’s really important; our growth as humans. We are taught that we need to get good grades in order to go to a good college, we are constantly judged on how well we do on tests using a grading, and most of the material being taught to us doesn’t even prepare us for what’s in store in the real world.
America is viewed as the most advanced and developed country in the world. It owns some of the largest businesses and companies known to man. It is on top of every new technological advancement that has touched the Earth. It is the country that boasts of having the best and most efficient military in the world. The list goes on and on. And although a lot these claims made by America is true, none can doubt that this country has its fair share of flaws. A flaw in the American system is the lack of education many people receive. I am making this claim because the number of people I see in the street that are poor. These people don’t have access to quality education which prevents them from getting jobs. In the essay, I will dissect this issue
The human mind is perhaps the greatest object on the earth, animate or inanimate, but without the proper training, the mind is a relatively useless tool. Through the development of formal education systems, humans as a whole have tried to ensure the training of all minds so as to continue prosperity for the world. Most of the time, though, education systems do not realize the harm they are doing to developing minds and the subsequent negative consequences. Among the largest of these inadequate education systems is the American primary schooling system. The American education system is in fact failing; it continues to deplete children of their natural creativity and thirst for knowledge while preaching conformity, which in turn creates an
This lack of motivation from students also is lowering expectations that were once high. Now in American education, for the most part, if a child thinks something is too hard in a class and feels that they are going to have to challenge themselves they give up automatically and the instructor or even the government is lowering standards to accommodate this mentality. When in reality pushing the student is what is going to help them in the long run. According to Chester Finn, chairman of the Koret Task Force, spending less on education is not the culprit of this lessened motivation because, “Performance has been flat in the United States and yet spending has been going up dramatically for a century” (Bethell). Sure more money can help get the resources for a school to be built and to hire instructors, but if a child does not want to be in
A big aspect of getting into college in this day and age is one’s ACT/SAT score. Students stress their whole high school career just for this one day that they take the test. This is causing families to go to the extremes of visiting psychologists all over the country until they find one who is willing to misdiagnose their child with ADD or ADHD. They do this so that they can get medication to make them focus and/or get extended time on their test. (Robbins) This makes testing unfair to students who who do not go to this extreme, as well as student who actually need these medications and extensions. One test on one random day does not show a true education. For instance the science section of the ACT does not show the prior knowledge of what a student knows in the subject, but instead their ability to read and understand what is already written on the pages. Schools now are so caught up in increasing how a school looks as a whole, so they try to improve the test scores by teaching to the test, doing so, was less important in the past. When in reality, this is not working. The average ACT score has not changed very much from 1997-2017 (Aldric). This shows that even though schools are focusing on the test, scores are not increasing. Schools should stop conforming to standardized test principles and start making education a more personalized process.
The educational system has not remained the same since the 80’s. Students that graduate post high school are entering college not prepared and most of them are still reading at middle school level. The question is why is it happening and who is allowing it? Why are more and more students unprepared for college and why do they graduate unprepared from high school? All the answers to these question are answered when one takes a good look into our educational system. Our educational system is weak and needs revisions by implementing more extracurricular activities and more intense courses in high school to improve students output in classes so that they can be more prepared for college level courses.
