PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS OF THEATRE ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE NIGERIAN ECONOMY

Abstract
The business of theatre management is business of management. It is a culmination of the directive principles, canons and protocols governing theatre and management together to form a formidable team which thus makes a theatre entrepreneur. Being a theatre entrepreneur in Nigeria entails many dilemmas, challenges and hurdles. Thus, this paper seeks to address the problems and prospects facing theatre entrepreneurship in Nigeria.

It is imperative to note that since the theatre manger’s work has the society in this case the Nigerian society and economy as the areal of plural work execution, then, there are challenges cum problems that he is faced with in the Nigeria economy and since he has problems, then, we also look into the prospect of theatre entrepreneurship in the Nigeria economy.
In Nigeria for instance, the movement of theatre for the business entrepreneur started with Hubert Ogunde in 1944. He was commissioned in that year to produce a play as a fund-raising activity for the Church of the Lord in Lagos. It marked the beginning of the organized commercial theatre in Nigeria by a Nigerian on a fairly large scale. The director-manager system, therefore, started with Hubert Ogunde because he was the artistic director, composer, and manager of his theatre 5. This organizational approach was adapted by the succeeding founders of theatre companies like the late Duro Ladipo and the late Kola Ogunmola. Consequently, the concept of theatre management has been in existence before now. The concern here is the meeting point which Olu Akomolafe succinctly puts the theatre manager within the professional company or in the institutions must familiarize himself with the events that are to take place in the theatre, decision-making
