HOW TO GIVE A GOOD HAIRCUT! One of the hardest things about giving a good haircut is being able to understand what the client ultimately wants to achieve. If you don’t have a clear understanding, you could be digging yourself a hole by giving a “bad” haircut, but the wrong haircut. The first and most important step to giving a good haircut and maintain this customer for life is a thorough evaluation and consultation. This consists of a proper greeting when you seat your customer at your station. You want to be sure to listen to your client and ask questions. You can either use your regular cutting shears, using the point to point cut to take out bulk, not length, or you can use a razor. It is pretty much personal choice and up to the client. I personally like the razor. In today’s society there isn’t much want or need for a perfectly clean hair cut, and the razor achieves kind of a messy, not so clean look. When you are all finished, you want to hand your client the mirror and turn them to all angles so they can see the finished cut and approve. Never try to hide a mistake, everyone knows that when you get a haircut the first thing you do is go home and look closely, so don’t even attempt it, it just causes embarrassment later. After approval, apply gel to the hair and explain the process and why you are applying. This is a sure way to get them to purchase the product also, and make your commission oh so sweet! Upon wanting you to style their hair, blow dry and style to their liking. Be sure to demonstrate and tell them what you are doing so they can go home and achieve the same look. There is nothing more frustrating when leaving a salon looking great and then never being able to get the look again because you don’t know how, sure it makes the stylist look like a magician, but in reality, we want the client to love their hair and be able to work with it at home.
