Identify methods to analyze the bottleneck using capacity planning Capacity planning is the process of determining the production capacity needed by an organization to meet changing demands for its health care services. Capacity planning is often a juggling act. Finding the ideal balance between customer demands and organizational capacity involves factoring multiple, dynamic factors into the process (Langabeer, 2008). The first step an organization must look at is to determine service level requirements. In the capacity planning process it is to categorize the work done by employees and to assess patients and employee expectations for how that work gets done (Langabeer, 2008). Next the organization must analyze current capacity; the current capacity of the emergency department must be analyzed to determine how it is meeting the needs of the patients. Finally, using forecasts of future business activity, future use of the emergency department requirements are determined. Implementing the required changes in patient pattern will ensure that sufficient capacity will be available to maintain service levels, even as circumstances change in the future. Ideally, service level requirements are ultimately determined by business requirements (Langabeer, 2008).
