Introduction Procter & Gamble is the world’s largest consumer goods company, with products selling within 65 different brand names. Commonly abbreviated as P&G, the Procter & Gamble Co. has far outgrown its humble beginnings as small, family run soap and candle shop in Cincinnati, OH. Now, this public, multinational corporation brings in 8 billion dollars a year in sales (Procter & Gamble 2015a). Background William Procter and James Gamble, immigrants from England and Ireland, founded Procter & Gamble in 1837. At the time, Procter was a candle-maker, and Gamble was a soap-maker who became involved in the candle-making business. Their paths crossed when they became brother-in-laws, each marrying a daughter of a successful businessman, Alexander Norris. Mr. Norris noticed they both competed in the same business and suggested they form a partnership. Taking his advice, the two men pooled their resources and thus formed Procter and Gamble (Procter & Gamble 2006). Procter & Gamble is no longer the soap and candle shop, but a global business, selling brand name products in several industries like, beauty, hygiene, home care, and many more! Current Position P&G’s mission statement is to “… provide branded products and services of superior quality and value that improve the lives of the world 's consumers” (Procter & Gamble 2015b).
