Production & Inventory Inventory is plays a very important part in today’s business world. Companies must maintain some type of inventory to cover the uncertainties of supply and demand. Inventory must be closely monitored to ensure there are just the right amount and not an excess. Inventory that has expiration dates must especially be monitored closely to avoid spoilage. This technology is currently being used by the Department of Defense, Wal-Mart and other major retailers. RFID technology uses communication via radio waves to exchange data between a reader and an electronic tag attached to an item, for the purpose of tracking and identification. So how does this technology benefit the manufacturing factory floor? The ability to track inventory and improve efficiency on a production line are just a few of the benefits this technology provides. Some other logistical factors that the radio frequency identification systems benefits are tracking work progress, reduce administrative error and reduce internal theft. According to (Brousell,2005);
RFID mandates established by Wal-Mart, other major retailers, and the U.S. Department of Defense have spurred innovation in every aspect of the technology. Manufacturers will benefit from these market forces. But that's not the only dynamic influencing manufacturers to adopt RFID. The other major factor is the recognized need within manufacturing for business process improvements that cut costs and create time-to-market improvements, higher customer satisfaction, and, most importantly, a new competitive edge.
