What are the causes and effects of violence in the NFL? Professional football is a very pressuring career. Jovan Belcher, who killed his girlfriend and then killed himself was evidently very mentally ill, maybe because of the NFL or because of something else. Adrian Peterson was charged with abusing his son in 2014. The cause of this could be from lack of parenting or inherited disciplines from his parents.
Jovan Belcher died in a murder-suicide, murdering his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, before driving to the Chiefs' training facility and shooting himself in the head with a handgun. In Belcher’s case, mental health played a huge role in what he did. In professional football, and almost every other professional sport, there’s pressure to be and do your very best. From there, it just seems to be a downward spiral from there. Stress leads to anxiety which often leads to depression. In Belcher’s last words, “I need help! I wasn’t able to get enough help,” (Par. 4) it’s very evident that he had some mental health problems. It’s also said that if Belcher did not own any guns, he or Kasandra would not have died. In

There is controversy that this case could even be considered a case of child abuse. Parents often parent their kids they way their parents raised them, but a lot of the forms of discipline from their childhood would be looked down upon today. Peterson could have just been disciplining his son like his parents did him. Adrian Peterson is only one of a handful of NFL players involved in domestic violence cases(pg. 2 par. 2), so what caused all of these cases? The cause can’t really be pinpointed because child abuse, and any domestic violence, has lots of causes, and all of these cases are unique. Since NFL players are rarely home because of football, it could have been due to lack of support and being under immense pressure from the
¬¬¬¬¬Steps had been taken to prevent injuries caused by the constant collisions of the game as far back as 1905. Theodore Roosevelt gathered coaches and athletic advisors to the White House in an effort to improve the game. The changes made improved the quality as well as lowered the death rate. In 1905 alone, eighteen people died. [] In more recent times, the murder-suicide of Jovan Belcher in 2012 stirred up a deal of concern. It brought attention to the elevated number of suicides in retired football players, as well as domestic violence. There is a history of football players effected with dementia and memory loss as well as different types of serious head injuries from the semi-concussive hits they are constantly taking to the head, neck, and
Rice is certainly not the only player to involve himself in a violent crime. Adrian Peterson physically abused his son, and Greg Hardy physically assaulted a woman after a night of drinking; threatening to kill her. Peterson received a restructured contract with the Minnesota Vikings that includes millions in new guaranteed money, and Hardy signed with the Dallas Cowboys even before his suspension was reduced two weeks ago
The national football league has stiffened its policy on legal hits. The hit zone has shrunk, while player frustrations have grown. The policy is enacted in an effort to reduce the number of concussions in the game of football. The enforcement of these rules has strayed away from being all about safety. The policy on hits has created a divide among its players and fans alike. The policy of hits being enforced so strictly has had a significant impact on the sport. The sociology of the NFL and the rule itself drive this argument. By stepping on the field as an NFL football player, it is accepted that it is very dangerous. The players make enough money to make the concussions worth it. Profiting from the fine money for these hits has caused the NFL to be enforcing these rules unethically, the rules and the impact they have had on the sport have been detrimental to football.
Multiple deaths from a degenerative brain disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, is what the true culprit of the NFL is. This disease is caused from repetitive blunt force trauma to the head, leading those who are effected to struggle later in life and even turn to suicide. People are writing about these safety concerns in football nowadays because of the multitude of deaths related to this disease and the way the NFL choses to deal with it. The NFL disregarding its players is a subject at hand currently because people continue to suffer from CTE without even confirming they have it before they have already deteriorated. “Football Has Become Too Real to Watch” by television writer, Eric Buchman, describes these realities of the NFL and how it went from being a safe haven to a place where the NFL pretends to be oblivious to the realities of the game. Buchman’s argument is that the joy of football is gone due to the reality of current issues within the NFL. The NFL getting away with awful things is what Buchman wants the reader to take away from this article. His contribution to this debate is that he offers a perspective of the fans for why this issue is important without any biases towards the NFL.
There are an estimated twelve active players with domestic violence arrest. One for example is Brandon Marshall. He has three charges and served a three- game suspension for personal conduct violation. But from there on his story changes. Brandon Marshall got treatment and then decided to be an outspoken voice against domestic violence and is now a success on and off the field.
As everyone who has access to a television or the Internet knows, a lot of the major headlines today are dealing with the domestic violence problem in the National Football League. In the article written by Thomas Barrabi in the International Business Times, “NFL’s History of Domestic Violence Extends Beyond Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson Abuse Cases”, it addresses the discrepancies the NFL has displayed throughout the years when it comes to disciplining the players involved in domestic violence disputes. This article takes a look at the NFL’s position on the crime of domestic violence throughout the years and today and also what they have done
Personal conduct in the NFL, National Football League, is an issue that is starting to spiral out of control. Late September, 2014, “the league [had] suspended at least 20 players for actions including assault, substance abuse and use of performance-enhancing drugs” (White); this was only a few weeks into the regular season of play for the league. The NFL has grown enormously since it was founded on August 20, 1920 in Canton, Ohio. But, this league has become more and more lenient with its players and personnel. Many professional athletes in the NFL receive special treatment regardless of their improper actions, thus allowing them to elude the consequences and in turn setting a misleading example for their young fans. In order
In February 2011 an NFL defensive player committed suicide and left a final note requesting his brain be donated to Boston University School of medical research where it was found that all his head injuries had caused long-term brain damage. Another NFL star that committed suicide, Junior Seau, was one of the toughest defenders to ever play the game. While playing Junior Seau was never sidelined for head injuries he sustained. According to his ex-wife Seau had multiple concussions throughout his career. (Velasco 2012) This is an example of the culture in the NFL of being “tough”, and not coming off the field no matter how severe the impact is. Research done at the University of Texas had results that showed individuals who have concussions in early adulthood have a higher chance to develop depression when they get older compared to people that haven’t had concussions. (Stong 2013)
The NFL has done a poor job handling players who have faced domestic violence cases. They still have players who were accused of domestic violence and found guilty that are still in the NFL. Tyreek hill is a player for the Kansas City Chiefs, was found guilty in 2015 for strangling his girlfriend. He was founded guilty for domestic violence. He is now back on the team and making an impact for the chiefs by having impactful games which is a blessing for him. “During Kansas City's 30-27 overtime win over Denver, Hill had one of the best games of any player all season. In the win, Hill scored three touchdowns and became the first rookie since 1965 to have a receiving touchdown, rushing touchdown and return touchdown all in the same game. (Breech/CBSSports,
Concussions and their side effects are traumatic to any player of the National Football League, not just at the time of the incident, but symptoms can last a lifetime and can in reality end a career. Results of these concussions not only affect themselves but the people around them including loved ones. “Since 2012 there have been 967 diagnosed concussions, and that includes preseason, regular-season practices plus games and postseason” (CNN 2014). Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), develops after multiple traumatic brain injuries and have led to former players and current to commit suicide. “Junior Seau, 43, a former linebacker shot himself in the chest, former Atlanta safety Ray Easterling, and former Chicago Bears defensive back Dave Duerson commits suicide by gunshot wound to the chest” (CNN 2014). Rather than shoot his head they shot themselves in the chest so that their brain can be used in Concussion and CTE research. Once a player gets a concussion, the likelihood of another increases, so and so forth. However, it is not just a running back or a nose tackle that can get this horrific injury, its anyone, it could be a kicker, a coach on the sideline; anyone that hits the ground too hard, or has head to head contact. Though the National Football League has become aware of this injury over the years and have implemented many protocols, that is not enough. This is a
Regarding the Dewan Smith-Williams case they’re goal to me is to protect the brand and not to protect the husband from himself and his high risk behavior to his wife and family because they didn’t want her to go to the police and keep it silent. I think Mrs. Williams made the right call to come forth and let it be known that spouses and/or partners are being treated unfair and something needs to be done. In my opinion, maybe if fans, anti-violence groups and women’s rights organizations get together and organize a plan that could force the owners to enact stronger and lasting reforms to improve the NFL actions and response to domestic abuse. They should make some amendments to the personal conduct policy. This topic relates to the discussion on human behavior because we want to know what causes the domestic abuse from the spouse especially if the abuser is in the NFL, a super star, and fame is growing and so forth. Find out what area of treatment and theory practice could be used to help the
Professional sports have been in the news for domestic violence for a really long time. Some that may come to your mind could be Ray Rice, Warren Moon, Greg Hardy, and Jose Reyes. Yes, three of these four players are in the National Football League (NFL), but that does not mean that only football players are the ones who have been doing this. The most recent one is Jose Reyes who plays in Major League Baseball (MLB). That is really ones opinion, but some don’t have anything but I slap on the wrist. Commissioners around these leagues usually suspend the player for a couple games until all of the details and videos come out. Ray Rice was suspended two games until they saw evidence then he was suspended for the whole year. Some wanted him banned
Domestic violence is one of the most common crime among male athletes. The statistics are staggering. Ray Rice, Greg Hardy, Ray McDonald – three standout NFL players who have been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons over the last 12 months. The acts of the men, particularly Rice, who was caught on camera punching his then fiancée and now wife, Janay in the elevator of an Atlantic City casino, brought domestic violence and sexual assault into sharp focus, in particular how the NFL handles players who commit such dreadful acts (and yes, we can all agree that the justice systems responsible for these cases failed terribly).
For the second interview, one of the questions was if you work for the State Hospital, what will be the reason to leave? The second question something like this, if you get hire, what will be you plan to catch up with the project assigned to you?
