While writing might seem like a simple task, it can be a daunting task for a lot of people. Sometimes it can be hard to express the ideas in your mind in the words of a paper. This results in a disconnect with what a writer may actually think. A great writer is one that can transform his thoughts into words perfectly. This is a craft that takes many years to perfect, which is why writing is troublesome for a lot of us. Many students also have had bad experiences with writing. Maybe they had a teacher that didn’t try to support them and their writing. They might not have ever gotten the help they needed and may feel that they are in a hole where their writing can’t get better. At this point, they just accept that their writing will never get better.
Many students have struggled with essays for their English class. They have difficulties due to many issues, the least of which are poor writing skills. Each person has their own area of writing which gives them the most trouble. If this lack of skill is not addressed then a student can be certain that his or her grade will fall. Personally, I have the most difficulty with conclusions, transitions, and comma usage. To address these issues I conducted research and found three effective sources; The Little seagull Handbook, Smart-words.org, and grammar.ccc.commnet.edu. These three sources assisted me in improving each of my three skills, which I struggle with.
Instructional Setting: Whole classroom usage, sometimes at desks working independently or with a partner, and also working as a class.
Students are subjected to write an array of essays, but they lack the required tools needed to effectively deliver a great paper. Practical recommendations are brought forth for teachers to use and good teachers will learn to design instruction and activities based on suitable references. Teachers must set goals and deliver their lesson with specific strategies to meet their objectives. They must learn to improve skills dramatically by observing and modifying the students. Teachers must plan strategies in order to help the struggling students catch up or exceed in their writing skills. They must learn to motivate their students by keeping them engaged throughout the writing process if not they risk losing the student’s ability and focus to do better.
As your paper finally slides into that dreadful homework basket, you realize you are finally done. That stressful weekend, with the anticipation, the typing, reading, re-reading and retyping. Is finally over, you have now handed in your essay. Does this sound familiar? Of course, it does! We have all worked on that English or history paper and felt relief after handing it in. But, why is this common event always so stressful for students? Perhaps it is in the way we write our essays, but is there any other way to do it? As it turns out… YES! There are many different strategies to writing, and in this editorial, we will outline some of the most commonly voiced methods.
In this article, “College Success” written by Bruce Beiderwell, Linda Tse, Thomas J. Lochhaas, and Nicholas B. deKanter, they explain the differences of high school and college writing, expectations of the instructors, and the types of papers that are assigned. Most students who struggle in their writing are usually still going through their transformation into college, without even knowing it. Though, how can you see these symptoms? “Students who struggle with writing in college often conclude that their high school teachers were too easy or that their college instructors are too hard” (Beiderwell, P. 1). When going into college there are all sort of ways of writing an essay, in high school you were taught the five paragraph basic

Student 5A paper provided an introduction paragraph with the main themes that gave the reader an idea of the paper but did not include a title. The body paragraphs provided details on the main ideas, but the ideas needed to be expanded on. Student 5A failed to further explain “The Space Race” and J.F.K with complex information which left the reading, asking questions such as, who is J.F.K. Was he important? What is the space race? The student’s paper contained no spelling errors and wrote in complete sentences. Students of the fifth-grade level should be able to write a paragraph containing five sentences, but student 5A failed to demonstrate this skill. The student provided specific dates and a conclusion restating the main topics in the
Hi Shiloh! I want to thank you for reminding us that writing is a process. It is also good for me to take note as I am starting out in my professional writing career. Although I didn't coin the term 'limited' in my post, we described our professional writing experiences as limited. We laid out a brief overview of our experiences coming from different premises other than the prompt. I recall my experiences in the form of a short bio, implying that I have done anything but creative writing. From what I comprehend, you list your experience to support the importance of the process. In contrast, you took a philosophical turn, challenging a misconceived notion that writing is about the act of writing.

In the first assignment, I assessed my writing with the online tool PaperRater. The score received was below average on almost all fronts, which surprised me. I established a goal to be writing weekly and applying online tools to provide feedback. While I have not completed this goal in a way I expected, my writing style has been enhanced. I put this improvement down to my research and study throughout this unit, as well as entering into a new workplace that requires a higher level of professionalism than my previous workplace.
Now that we are getting more involved with writing, I’m starting to get a little more stressed when writing a paper. I’m not a good writer but I know that with practice I will only get better. The tips and instructions provided in this course are definitely helping me eliminate some of my writing anxieties. The” Quick Comma Reference Sheet “is a tool I will continue to use in the future. I always seem to get nervous when writing a paper regardless of what it is. I am always worrying about the readers reading my work and finding my errors. I’m hoping that at the end of the class I will worry less and find writing enjoyable.
Today in class we had Diane Martinez come to speak to us about professional writing as a concentration. She began by going over the what the professional writing concentration would be useful towards. She handed out a paper that listed what kind of jobs students in the professional writing program can get. Some of these jobs include business, creative writing, information technology (IT), journalism, and public relations. Also listed on the paper was some of the most common jobs for professional writers; this can include working as a writing coach, writing for a magazine, being a public relations specialist, and working in publishing. She informed us that English majors concentrating in professional writing are valued because they are flexible and able to communicate well. Many fields and professions need professional writers, even if they are not necessarily looking for them.
In the UK, instructors like to assign term papers, essays, case studies, and other types of writing assignments to develop writing skills. These are important skills, but, in most cases, the strict academic style of a term paper is very different from the writing skills needed in the real world. Most students understand the content of the paper, but they struggle with the required style, grammar and citations needed. It doesn't seem right to pour many hours of work into a paper only to lose points for a misplaced comma or an improperly done citation.
Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally.
