Professional Resources Inquiry I have always felt that the simple action of human touch is an underrated aspect of our lives. Only now, with the advances in neuroscience, we are finally able to prove the science behind why touch is so important in our lives. For the purposes of this paper, I will be focusing on the benefits of touch for infants and small children. I think that a lot of people don’t realize how important it is to have touch in our lives. I have always been interested in the ways the simplest of human contact like a hand on a shoulder or a hug can change people’s lives for the better. (Box 35-2, page 760) While different parts of the book described different aspects of touch as therapy, the general statement is that touch is beneficial to everyone. This book is written by Canadian doctors and nurses and has had all of its facts checked and approved before publication so I feel that as a resource I can count on this book to be a reliable source of information. As it is a textbook for nursing students, the intended audience is primarily those studying nursing. With that in mind, many people would not have access to this resource for general inquires. Resource 2 At the University of Miami, the world’s first Touch institute was built in 1992. Since then, this internationally renowned facility has been conducting research into the nature of touch and its benefits psychologically and physically with people all across the lifespan. They primarily focus on touch in regards to massage therapy and their website is focused mainly on resources for medical professionals and research scientists. With the many scientists and doctors that run this institute, this is a great resource for my search as all published research is peer reviewed and accepted by the larger scientific community. The volume of research that has come out of this institution is also what makes it a great resource.It has collected the results of a wide variety of studies done on the benefits of touch and offers them all on their website free and with easy access.
