Professionalism In Nursing Case Study

Introduction
From all the recent study I have done over the past weeks I have realised that in order to understand the concept of professionalism in nursing, you first need to think about the word and what it means to you. How do you define the word professionalism? If you said things like team work, behaviour, willing to help others, attitude in all your work you do than you have a pretty good idea. I’m going to put forward my ideas about what is not professional about this case study I was presented with. I shall also write about social media, code of ethics for nurses and nursing standards and the impact that these have on patients and us as nurses when used in an incorrect manner. This says to me that social media used in an unprofessional way that impacts others is not professional.
As stated in the case study ‘Later that evening, after your shift has finished, you discover that your friend and peer has posted the image to a social media website. In the image the patient's details are clearly identifiable, as are other hospital staff who were unaware that their photo was being taken. If we read the (code of professional conduct for nurses 2008), point five this states ‘Nurses treat personal information obtained in a professional capacity as private and confidential.’ As we can see this has not been done as this picture she has taken has put the patients personal information on social media for all the world to see than makes the patient identifiable, but not just the patient the nurses whom are in the picture that have no idea their picture was taken. Your friends and peer are able to convince you that the situation is ‘no big deal’ and there for you do not report the issue to an appropriate person. Reading the (Code of ethics nurses Australia 2008a) in the conduct statement 2, reading the points 2 ‘Nurses practise in accordance with wider standards relating to safety and quality in health care and accountability for a safe health system, such as those relating to health documentation and information management, incident reporting and participation in adverse event analysis and formal open disclosure procedures.6’ and (Code of ethics nurses Australia 2008b) point 3
‘Nurses’ primary responsibility is to provide safe and competent nursing care. Any circumstance that may compromise professional standards, or any observation of questionable, unethical or unlawful practice, should be made known to an appropriate person or authority. If the concern is not resolved and continues to compromise safe and competent care, nurses must intervene to safeguard the individual and, after exhausting internal processes, may notify an appropriate authority external to
