Professionalism is ‘the competence or skill expected of a professional’ and ‘the practising of an activity, especially a sport, by professional rather than amateur players’ (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/professionalism) An HR professional is able to demonstrate knowledge, skill with the ability to apply strategy, solution and leading HR in the field of people management. In order for a HR professional to be competent within the HR sector the CIPD have set out a code of conduct and created a HR professional map of how a HR professional should conduct themselves at all times. The CIPD HR professional map is a framework that sets out the standards for HR professionals around the world: the activities, knowledge and behaviours needed for success. (CIPD) First launched in 2009 the map was developed in order to define great HR, diagnose areas of success and improvement, build HR capability and recognise achievement through professional qualifications and membership, developed by the profession for the profession (CIPD). The map consists of ten professional areas, two of which are considered core areas which are insights, strategies and solutions and leading HR where the other professional areas are; Organisation design, Organisation development, Resourcing and talent planning, Learning and development, Performance and reward, Employee engagement, Employee relations and Service delivery and information.
