Have you ever waged war against your wife? Caesar Octavian Augustus did. Augustus was a great leader. Leaders are necessary because they need to show leadership amongst the people and unite the people as one doing anything to keep them safe. Caesar Octavian Augustus was one of Rome’s greatest leaders by showing that at the age of 19, he can rule one of the most powerful nations by any means including war (http://www.pbs.org/empires/romans/empire/augustus.html)
Augustus Caesar is most commonly known for his role in building the Roman Empire. The civilization thrived under his rule for over 40 years and continued to use his methods for hundreds of years to come. His unique status in the government allowed for him to develop his authority among the Roman citizens as the most qualified person to rule the people. Augustus Caesar is most admired for expanding Rome with a loyal army, advancing the societal structure, and using his cleverness to run a successful empire.
The tenor of his auto-biographical account is one of propaganda. Augustus, in truth maintained power for himself yet portrays his reasoning in Res Gestae that he ruled wisely and with the consent of his people. Augustus claims he “handed over the state from [his] power to the dominion of the senate and Roman people” and “had no greater power than the others who were colleagues with me in each magistracy.” He later proclaims he is awarded by vote the moniker father of Rome. Clearly the tone is one of propaganda since it is his perception of reality, thus a biased account of the actual methods in which he gained his title, Emperor of
Octavian (Augustus) had become a Roman empire he to make Rome a well-going city-state. His mindset goal was to bring Rome to a superior city-state, within doing a life changing for the war, people and city. One of his goals was too “demonstrated his political genius by reconciling his military monarchy with republican institutions” (Western Civilization TextBook Pg 140) the Roman Republic had a majority of problems and difficulties of living when Julius was the ruler of the Roman empire. Julius Caesar made Rome go through war and had a misconducted and none guidance of leadership within the military group. Rome had lost half of their military by them getting killed by other countries and losing their lives fighting for their country. Octavian wanted his military to be a more civil-military with no wars nor loss of power. He didn't want to create any type of civil war. All Octavian wanted was to have peace with other countries and to help one another. Octivaina also changed the rules of violence
A successful emperor is a leader who is willing to place Rome above their own desires and needs, like the emperors Julius and Augustus. Julius was the first emperor of Rome. He was a very ambitious man, and he had many visions for the empire of Rome. Julius has built up the Roman military by “careful
According to many historians Augustus was not only the first emperor of Rome but also the greatest. During his long and impressive career Augustus dissolved the faulty governmental system of the Republic and created a new basis of Roman government that stood for three centuries. On his death bed Augustus was purported to have said: “Did I play my part well?” Through examination of his reforms of the Roman tax and legal system, as well as his role in creating the Pax Romana and a stable military it is evident that Augustus’s reing and reformes was a good thing.
Augustus received the tribuncian power for life and assumed the role of protector of the Roman people. He also received the right to intervene in those provinces administered by the Senate. The backbone of Augustus’ power came from being Imperium of the military. It was of great importantance
To change an empire from a Republic to a Monarchy, is in itself a great achievement, but to be that one man that successfully changes the way of old to the original form of state is an amazing fete. The will to achieve this, and the desire must be great and you must truly be remarkable, although in saying that, having your forefathers pave the way, assist in reaching that goal. This is what Augustus achieved, he became greatest man in Rome, the highest achievement one might endeavour, outdoing his forefathers. He played the game of Roman politics against some of the greatest minds, brilliantly and shaped what is now known as the “Great Roman Empire”.
It is very interesting that Augustus was a special emperor and leader in both Roman Republic and Empire because he was the last Republic leader and he was the first emperor. He was like a bridge or a construction politician, leader and emperor between two regimes. But, how were the regimes according to his time period? I need to focus on it before analyzing and evaluating Augustus and his doings. Firstly, he was very clever that he got the ability to take advantage of every and each situation regarding the state and political issues. It might be being one of Julius Caesar’s relatives that he was Augustus’ uncle at first, and then Caesar adopted him. Maybe, he wanted to make real his step-father’s wish to change the regime gradually. His first smart political movement was the second triumvirate’s setting up to bring the State back to the previous good years to govern. But, after ten years’ triumvirate, it had some defects because of the members’ beneficial conflicts with one another, and then Augustus confronted to Marcus Antonius and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus because of their personal benefits and ambition, and “he alone was most insistent that no one should be spared…” as Suetonius stated. He was not happy with the other two triumvirs, and moreover, he was suspected on some of his generals, consul members, and praetors, such as Pinarius, a Roman knight,
Augustus also reformed the religious systems in Rome that had been previously destroyed by constant warfare. Augustus thought that such a reform of the “old religion, and a renewed trust in the traditional gods would help restore the confidence of the people(Wasson, 2016).” Augustus also “revived the priesthoods in Rome and ended up being appointed as the Pontifex Maximus(Fife, 2012).” This newly acquired position left Augustus as the ruler of the Roman Empire secularly and religiously. Now that Augustus had two highly influential roles he had unprecedented power and control over two separate spheres. This high amount of power could have been easily abused, but it was not. Augustus revived the Ludi Secularse which was a religious celebration that occurred once every one hundred and ten years. Augustus was involved in the revived secular games “which had been omitted because of the disturbances of the civil war(McDermott).” Augustus also guided the construction of an Imperial Cult. This Imperial Cult was made for worship of the Emperor as a god. Some may say this is egotistical since he himself is the Emperor, but he was made the Pontifex Maximus, and was a true savior to Rome. Augustus also aided in the construction of a multitude of the city’s ancient temples,
To begin with, Octavian was Julius Caesar’s adopted son who competed with Mark Anthony who was Julius Caesar’s trusted general for being the successor after Caesars death. In a fight against Mark Anthony (31 BCE Battle of Actium) he defeated Mark became the new emperor (27 BCE). His name later changed to Augustus. Augustus is his long term run as emperor he ended the Roman civil wars. He established some kind of state welfare where he built hospitals, houses, provided good supply of food, etc. Made a way to establish work programs for the people. He respected the decisions of the senate and was more of a good speaker. Augustus of Primaporta was appointed by the senate in honor of Augustus in which give emphasis to the power of Rome exemplified
At a young age he sat underneath Julius Caesar. As noted, Julius was one of the most known rulers in all of history. So in that case he must have done something right. So at age sixteen Augustus sat and observed him. While he observed him, he also worked for him. So working for him he got practical learning. He was able to do hands on work. But for the first year, he mainly learned by observation. The down fall to this was that he only had a year to do so. Julius was murdered shortly after he took Augustus and cut his time with him short. In Julius’ will he gave full power over to his territory and rein. Since this happened Augustus was thrown into the fire. This is
As the first Roman emperor (though he never claimed the title), Augustus led Rome’s transformation from republic to empire during the chaotic years following the assassination of his great-uncle and adoptive father Julius Caesar. Augustus became one of Rome’s greatest leaders and he established the principate, the form of government under which Rome ruled its empire for many years.
Augustus, during his reign as emperor proved effective in ruling through the ideas he implemented to solidify his country. Tacitus stated “nullo adversante” which translates into English “Wholly unopposed” (http://janusquirinus.org/Quotes/QuotesHome.html) this identifies the effectiveness of his reign and the strength he had politically over Rome. Important actions such as the creation of religious and moral reforms, the constitutional agreement and the implementation of the building programme all succeeded in creating stability within the Roman Empire.
Augustus was one of the main leaders during Pax Romana. His Rule was from 27 BC to 28 AD. He was one of the most important rulers in history because he helped to expand border and make peace for Rome. The Roman Empire was described as an autocratic government.
