Programs Offering Food and Medical Assistance

The most important food aid program in the nation is SNAP, supplemental nutritional assistance. It helped nearly 46.6 million people in 2012. It has an incredible impact on poverty in the United States. Helped to decrease the number of poor people in America in 2011. A lot of people think that because SNAP is fairly generous with the benefit it gives, that it gives some people no incentive to work. Contrary to popular belief, though, SNAP does not give enough aid for someone to live comfortable without having a job. To many, SNAP is a temporary help when the income for the household is low (“HUNGER”).

Food Stamp is a government-funded program in the United States. This is a program that helps people buy food for their families; in other words, it is a very important program to families living in poverty. It is the nation’s most important program in the fight against hunger. This program was developed in the 1960’s; it is made to improve the nutrition level and food purchasing power of people with low-income. This program is offered to people who cannot afford to buy groceries for their families, regardless of age, color, sex or religion. Food Stamps can only be used to buy food items not hygiene or household items, and it’s offered only on a monthly basis.

SNAP is the foundation of nutrition assistance programs. This program provides over 47 million individuals in nearly 23 million low-income households. The eligibility is not restricted to certain groups of individuals, and because of this, SNAP serves a vast amount of families with children, elderly people, and individuals with disabilities. Others eligible for SNAP include families with adults who work in low-wage jobs, unemployed workers, and those with a fixed income. The SNAP Program assists about 72 percent of people who live in households with children. Nearly 25 percent of households with seniors and individuals with disabilities, are also assisted (Rosenbaum, 2013).

Food Stamps are provided for many families in the hope that these families will not starve and can put filling, nutritious food on the table. According to the Food Stamp Act of 1977, this program was enacted to ““to alleviate hunger and malnutrition … by increasing food purchasing power for all eligible households who apply for participation.” (usda.gov, 2013) Recipients can use these just like regular cash at any local grocery store. They also may receive Medicaid. This program provides for many the medical treatment they would not be able to afford otherwise. This is especially true for children and pregnant women below the poverty line.

Medicaid is one of the most widely acknowledged sources of health insurance coverage in the United States, benefiting over 48 million low-income children and parents (Hansen, 2012). It also supports those over the age of 65 who may also receive Medicaid. By providing essential health insurance protection, Medicaid supports the growing un- and under- insured population. This federal program for the financially needy is administered at the state level. Coverage varies and each state creates its own rules, typically offering support through county social services, welfare, or other department of human services offices (Goodman, 1991).

Medicaid is the largest source of health coverage available in the United States that provides health coverage to United States residents including seniors, children, pregnant women, and individuals with disabilities. To participate in Medicaid, federal law requires states to cover mandatory eligibility groups of individuals such as low-income families, qualified pregnant women and children, and individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income; each state may choose to cover residents who receive home and community based services and children who are in foster care (Medicaid, 2017).

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program gives those who have a low income assistance when buying food. Indiana has two offices. It’s possible for those who desire to apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance to apply in different ways. One way to apply would be to get in contact with the local office. The local office in Muncie is located at 1107 South Tillotson, Suite 2 Muncie, IN 47304. The office is open Monday through Friday; it opens at 8:00am and closes at 4:30 pm. The office can also be reached by phone, at (800) 403-0864 (Family and Social Services Administration, 2013). SNAP is a program that makes it possible for those who would not be able to buy food or buy the right food to have access to a better selection of food when they do not make the amount that would make that possible.

Do you do the right thing when no one is watching you? If you do then you are morally and ethically correct. As the good old saying stated “Do unto other as you like them to do unto you”. As the world has a gatekeeping if you believe in GOD, also the policy and regulations has one as well. The only question is who is it and what is the placement in the position in the government with factor that are place in front of them.

In life things do not always go as planned, we run into some rough patches. For example, one can suddenly get fired from their job but that does not stop the bills from rolling in especially when there is a family to take care of, in situations like this financial help can really be useful. Welfare programs like the “ temporary assistance for needy families” purpose is give money to a group of parents and dependent children living together in a household. Another way that the government has been helping is by offering food stamps, food stamps provide a monthly wage to help keep the family in need feed. Unfortunately many will be cut off from food stamp in 2016 because the waivers have expired, as many as a million people will no longer receive it. There are those that believe government assistance is making a mistake with these welfare programs. After doing some research, their reason for feeling this way is because they think that it is making people in these programs more dependent saying “they will no longer wish to work because they won 't receive the profits gained from the governments help anymore.” Even though there are some that take advantage of the help they receive, helping the less fortunate is priority number one. Most forms of government welfare should not be abolished because it offers assistance for those in need.

Despite the government’s reasons for the budget cut 850 thousand households would be losing an average of 90 dollars per month (Resnikoff 1). This is unfortunate because reports have shown that SNAP is not only an effective federal program but it also has a positive outcome for individuals. Even in the previous statistics, going from 3.9 million to 5 million people lifted above the poverty line in only a two year difference is a significant breakthrough for low income individuals. It is often easy to find yourself falling under the poverty line, but harder to pick yourself back up.
