Although it can be argued that people are no longer enjoying experiences and becoming narcissistic by the amount of pictures taken, in Susan Sontag’s essay, “Why We Take Pictures”, she depicts her theory that photography can be used as a defense mechanism against anxiety and a tool of power. Photography has hugely influenced the world we live in and has changed the way we see things. Since the invention of the camera, every major moment in modern history has been documented and captured on film. For example, when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, a camera was there to show people celebrating and families reuniting. Similarly, when the passenger airship Hindenburg was destroyed after catching fire in 1937, a camera was there to capture the moment.

The name "Photography" comes from the Greek words for light and writing. Sir John Herschel, was the first to use the term photography in 1839, when he managed to fix images using hyposulphite of soda. He described photography as "The application of the chemical rays to the purpose of pictorial representation". Herschel also coined the terms "negative", "positive" and "snapshot".

Photography grants the power to seize a moment, a moment so precious, so intimate, so important that we as humans are allowed to cherish and hold tight to that moment; a chance to reminisce. That precious moment, as Annette Kuhn says, “show[s] not so much that we were once there, as how we once were” (Annette Kuhn 95). The deceased are brought back to life. A childhood is relived. A relationship is repeatedly forged. Photography imprisons time, holds it hostage—chained to the walls of our memories, giving the viewer the power to continually find the treasure inside, that one split second in time. Photography captures the essence of a specific time and place; it grants the privilege to relive that exact moment.

Imagine a life without photographs, do you think we would appreciate life more or less? Photographs help us relive the moments we wanted to capture in life that we enjoyed. We are able to reminisce in those events, every single time we look at those picture. Especially since photographs give us a full on visual description on what everyone in the photo wore and the background. In the book, On Photography, by Susan Sontag, she explains how photograph is both an object and a tool and how its utility changes depending on context and intentions of oneself. Not only are photographs a physical object, it gives us a way to visualize a captured moment. Before social media added the opportunity to upload photographs, the only way we can see a photograph is after we printed out the film. Social media is a great way to connect or reconnect with other users; and now that there is an option to upload a photograph, it gives people to be more admirable or hateful.

Photographing has been enjoyed by many people for a long time. Today, it is very easy for everyone to own a camera so this hobby is becoming more and more popular. Everyone like taking photograph but their photo is not always beautiful. Having an expensive camera does not mean that you will have wonderful photographs. The beauty of a photograph
