Ralph sits in the Pere Marquette rail depot in Flint, fidgeting with the lose button on his overcoat, and looking down at his shabby brown shoes. The morning sun is low and catches dust in its light as it shines through the windows. His eyes dart to the door every time it opens. He is expecting a cop to walk in at any moment. He is getting desperate and would look suspicious if it wasn’t for his overall gentle appearance. He gets up and checks the time tables for the fourth time and debates if he should inquire why the train is late. He walks to the window and watches the congregation gathering outside the Lakeview Methodist Episcopal Church, which ironically is housed in the former Flint Brewery building and has been since 1915, when …show more content…
Walking that morning, something in Smith-Bridgman 's & Co store window caught his eye, in the display where a pair of red alligator skin shoes. These shoes intoxicated him and without a second thought Ralph went in to buy them. The salesman said that they were one of a kind, sure to be the only pair in Flint. Ralph paid cash for the shoes and as store policy directed, a sales recite including Ralphs name and address was retained in the men’s departments as a record of sale.
Ralph had gotten home and put the shoes on. They were a size to large and without question the nicest thing he had ever owned. Ralph needed to deliverer some gin to a house around noon and was excited to wear the new shoes out. Though he had never done a delivery before, he had sold to this guy plenty of times at Atwood. He packaged up the gin and headed out just before noon to travel the few blocks to the customer’s house wearing the new red shoes.
About a block from the house Ralph saw the two foot patrol cops step out of Alvord’s Market. They waited for him to pass then flowed behind him. Ralph was worried but talked himself down. He had packaged the gin to look like bread and the house was just around the corner, besides he didn’t recognize them and they likely didn’t recognize him. He got to the house and went through the gate and around to the side door and knocked; no answer. He knocked again and stepped back to make sure the cops had passed. They were standing just

In a quest for a sense of belonging and success in life as well as a need for survival and money from a steady job, Richard attempts to conform to the social rules of those around him and the expectations of how he must behave like a second-class citizen. To feel like a part of the community and to please his family in hopes of improving his home life, Richard begins to attend a Protestant church. He consents to become a member of the church and is baptized, but he does so to please his mother and because his need for association and acceptance with a group is immense. After the church service that night, Richard reflects, “I had not felt anything except a sullen anger and a crushing sense of shame. Yet I was somehow glad that I had got it over with; no barriers now stood between me and the community”. In addition to these expectations from his family and the black community he associated with,
I sneaked up the back porch steps to get inside the house. Maybe the vampire bat don't say it , but the only thing thought on my mind was “aha, you doggone Amoses, that hurt, but now i get my revenge!”they haven't locked the kitchen window . it slid open with just a couple of squeaks, then i was inside the amos house crouched down like a cat burglar. Quick as a rabbit i looked under the table to see if they’d moved my suitcase. It was still there.” Bud was a risk taker because he sneaked out of the shed to get revenge on the amoses whitch was difficult and scary considering that it was night time and the amoses were asleep. Bud was also a risk taker because he snuck into the house to check on his suitc
When you think about the pinnacle city, the turning point in the Industrial Revolution, Flint, Michigan comes to mind. It was a city that perfectly encapsulated the American Dream and set the standard for the working class in America. Flint, Michigan was home to General Motors and at one point they were the driving force of the economy. However, that success was fleeting due to globalization and with many competing companies outsourcing, GM had to make many tough decisions that ultimately led to its downsize. When GM left Flint, the city was devastated and it’s exit contributed to the poverty we see now. The post-industrial era not only left the city in despair, but also left many things in questions, such as the large amounts of lead used during that era that has thus left the city more vulnerable. The current crisis in Flint is able to portray the damages of this ‘industrial legacy’ that has now affected their water. The Flint water crisis could have been avoided had they properly assessed the situation and went in with the proper tools. Just how they were able to assess and adjust laws to save people during the industrial revolution, Flint needs to implement the same changes. This case is able to illustrate the ways in which race and socioeconomic status intersect with one 's insurance to uphold human rights and environmental health.
Water is one of life’s most precious resources. Without it, life as we know it would cease to exist. Almost all life is dependent on water for survival. Humanity uses water in almost everything they do in their daily lives, whether that be for consumption or production. However water itself is not enough to sufice, clean water is required for life to thrive. Dirty untreated water can be the cause for death as well, so it is integral that water be kept clean. The government has enacted laws to ensure that our water is maintained and kept clean. These laws cover industries, plumbing, and sanitation among other things. Unfortunately, the city government in Flint Michigan willfully failed to provide safe water for its citizens.

Flint in Michigan is located 70 Miles away from the shores of large fresh water bodies, the Great Lakes. Despite this close proximity to the fresh water bodies, the residents have not been able to get the clean water. The water supply of Flint in Michigan in the United States has undergone serious water contamination crisis. The water crisis started in April 2014 (Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, 2016). The contamination of drinking water began when the source of water was changed from the treated Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Flint River. This later led to a serious contamination of the water due to lead contamination hence creating more danger in the public health. The Flint River had a corrosive nature and caused lead from the old pipes to leach into the water supply. This caused heavy metals in the water supply. This posed serious health problems. For example, six thousand to twelve thousand children were exposed to the contaminated water. The blood-lead level in children increased. The alteration in the water source was the main reason behind the water crisis in Flint.
An essential necessity for life is slowly killing residents in Michigan. The town of Flint, Michigan is slowly being poisoned by their water supply. Flint is 70 miles north of Detroit with a population of 98,310. According to the U.S. Census Bureau a little under half of residents live below the poverty line. More than fifty-five percent of the city’s population is African-American (CNN Library). The dangerous lead levels in the water went unnoticed for years, despite the residents’ complaints of discolored and foul-smelling water. The question at hand is how could this happen?

Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” is an excellent example of the use of allegories and symbolism as a form of satire on Puritan faith. According to Frank Preston Stearns, author of The Life and Genius of Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Hawthorne may have intended this story as an exposure of the inconsistency, and consequent hypocrisy, of Puritanism” (Stearns 181). Throughout the story of “Young Goodman Brown,” Hawthorne tries to infuse as many symbols and allegories as he can to enhance the overall meaning of his story. He uses the village, Goodman Brown, Faith, the man in the forest, and the time spent in the forest as either a symbol or an allegory to get his point across that Puritans are not always what they seem to be.
