Prometheus: What Lies Asunder? Not another Spoiler Dear God!
The film Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott, explores the thoughts on the origin of life on the planet we call Earth, if the entity we know as God is actually a superior race of Engineers from the stars, and weaving several religious symbols we associate with Christianity into the plot. In ancient mythology, Prometheus was the Titan god of forethought and was charged with the shaping of man from clay. He was later cast out for trying to give mankind too much power to suit the other gods. In the movie, Prometheus is also the name of the spaceship that the scientist’s use to carry out their own search for our origins. At the beginning, the movie depicts how the aliens seeded Earth

I'm really intrigued by those eternal questions of creation and belief and faith. I don't care who you are, it's what we all think about. It's in the back of all our minds” (Spitznagel). From these two quotes, it is evident that Ridley wanted to show that God is an alien because in this twisted tale even Jesus is an alien, this from the director himself is hard to refute. However, if this were set to reason it would not stand the test, for the aliens looked similar to us but discernably different and all we have learned from biblical teachings is that Jesus looked ordinarily human just endowed with certain powers from or through God. Had he looked otherworldly history would have been written differently; the Bible teaches that God made us in his image and anything less would not have been seen as the son of God. But this does help explain why the Engineers want to obliterate us, we crucified one of their emissaries, Jesus. Of the religious symbols in the film, the most noteworthy of them is the fact that Dr. Shaw believes that aliens created us yet she wears a cross, this is quite intriguing, to say the least. The cross, we learn, in one of her dreams, is given to her as a child by her mother, we do not know at this point if it is a sentimental keepsake or if indeed she is very devout. In that she really cares for the cross is evidenced in the movie in the scene near the end where the injured and blood-stained Noomi Rapace grasps for her cross, and the now beheaded android David says, “Even after all this, you still believe” (Prometheus). It seems that a scientist wearing a cross and believing that we were created by aliens is contradictory. However, it could be, in my view, that as the film explores God vs. Alien creation, she worships the creator that gave us life regardless of who it was. Further evidence of the
Knowledge plays an incredibly large part of Mary Shelly’s novel, Frankenstein. I think that Victor’s obsessive and unhealthy search for knowledge is the true cause of his suffering. Not only does he neglect his friends and family while working to create the monster he puts his own health in danger. “I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body. For this I had deprived myself of rest and health.” In this quote we see that Victor stops at nothing to find if he would be successful with his creation. Victor has made this project such a main priority that once it is completed and the creature comes to life he does not know what to do. Since Victor has met his goals and done what he said he wanted to do he does not want to deal with the being he just created so this becomes a problem for him. We see that Victor was very troubled by this whole experience when he says, “You seek for knowledge and wisdom, as I once did; and I ardently hope that the gratification of your wishes may not be a serpent to sting you, as mine has been.”
In the book, The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, the protagonist, Matteo Alacrán was not born but harvested. As the book goes more in depth, Matt has an unbearable final battle and figures out his true identity, which turns him into the hero that he becomes.
Matteo Alacrán is a clone, which are the roadkill of the land called Opium in the book The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. Matteo, also known as Matt throughout the story, is the clone of the Lord of Opium, who we later find out is a very evil man. At a young age, he had no friends besides his guardian, Celia, and lived in an isolated place in the farms of Opium. When he was six years old, he is found by 3 children. Steven is the original Matteo Alacran’s Great-Great-Grandson, while Emilia and Maria are the children of the Senator of the United States. At first sight, they believe Matt is an eejit, which is like a zombie, until Matt breaks the window and jumps out, landing on glass and passing out.
In the story, The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer, The main character is Matteo (Matt) Alacrán. The main conflict in the book is that Matt is a clone of El Patrón. El Patrón is a very powerful drug lord the rules Opium. Clone are made/ created for organs for their real persona; so Matt was created so El Patron could have a heart or new organs to live. People hate clones because they are not real people and are just duplicates, that mean they have no purposes than for organs.
Matt meet’s his new teacher for the first time,”‘ Learning is fun!’ said Teacher. ‘I’ll bet you’re a smart boy. I’ll bet you learn all your lessons fast and make your mommy proud of you’ […] ‘He can read a bit, though.’ ‘Reading is fun!’ Teacher said in a hearty voice.”(71). During this quote, Matt has just met his new teacher who tells him to call her “Teacher.” Matt notices how she acts a bit off or different than other people he has met. Most of the dialogue in this quote comes from Teacher and some of the words are from Tam Lin speaking for Matt since Matt still hasn’t spoken yet. This is indirect characterization for Teacher. In this particular quote, the author is using the method “speech” to show the teacher’s feelings towards teaching. Earlier in the book, the author also uses Matt’s thoughts to characterize Teacher as being a little bit weird. From this quote we can figure out that Teacher is very excited and optimistic based on the amount of exclamations she uses. We know that she is very cheerful based on the way that she talks about how learning and reading are
You thought clones were not real, well think again. Matt is a clone of the most powerful ruler in opium drug country. The theme we chose for this book “House of the Scorpion” by Nancy Farmer is that the people who truly love you will risk everything for you. The first reason is that Celia loves Matt and takes major risks for him. The second reason is the love Maria shows for Matt.
In Pearl S. Buck’s novel, The Good Earth, the protagonist, Wang Lung, starts out as a very poor farmer in China. He marries a slave named O-lan and starts a family with her. Famine soon strikes the town and there is no food to be found anywhere. Wang Lung moves his family South in hopes of finding a job there. Eventually, a group of poor people raid the homes of the rich. Wang Lung and O-lan both join in, getting away with enough gold and valuables to get back to their land in the North. Wang Lung uses this stolen money to buy more land and hire laborers. He quickly becomes one of the richest men in his town. Wang Lung, however, does not know that with great wealth comes great responsibility. His wealth corrupts him and his moral judgements become blurred. Wang
Letter 1 Explain what is established in the first passage/letter who is narrating? Why is he making this voyage? When and where is this taking place? To whom is he writing the letter?
"Do you think, Victor," said he, "that I do not suffer also? No one could love a child more than I loved your brother" (tears came into his eyes as he spoke); "but is it not a duty to the survivors, that we should refrain from augmenting their unhappiness by an appearance of immoderate grief? It is also a duty owed to yourself; for excessive sorrow prevents improvement or enjoyment, or even the discharge of daily usefulness, without which no man is fit for society." (78)
Playing God usually ends up in catastrophic events, and can even lead to the loss of one’s life. In Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein’s obsession with creating life ultimately leads to the death of many of his loved ones. In Frankenstein, Victor, Robert, and the creature all share some trait that shows how they try to play God.
ve you ever got treated badly because you are different? Matt did in the book, The House of the Scorpion, written by Nancy Farmer. He got treated badly because he a clone. This book is about using livestock to clone human beings. It describes the behavior and relationship between human beings when they are born through normal way versus clones. The theme I think best is people treat others with disrespect just because they are different. The first evidence from the book is when Rosa mistreats Matt because she found out that he was a clone. The second evidence is that Steven, Emilia and Benito are unfriendly to Matt because he was a clone. The third evidence that support my theme is that Mr. Alacran and Felicia treats Matt very bad because
Did Mary Shelley initially title her work about Victor Frankenstein and his creation The Modern Prometheus solely because of the glaring similarities between their stories? That is a question that is often discussed, but a conclusion rarely arrives. One of the possible reasons for this could be because there are many different interpretations of the Promethean myth, which are mainly based on the ambiguous nature of the story. The parallels between the Promethean myth and Frankenstein are obvious, and that, in combination with her subtitle, The Modern Prometheus, indicates that Mary Shelley did have the myth in mind as she wrote the story.
Prometheus, the Titan of Greek mythology, was considered to be the most important Titan ever in all the myths. He helped the human race tremendously in his efforts to sustain an easier lifestyle. Mankind had great respect for him because of his advantages and gifts or abilities he gave them. Also, his battle against Zeus as a result of his love for man was very much appreciated. Prometheus was one of the most interesting Greek mythology figures in his time. He was a very kind, loving, generous, and courteous god to mankind. This can be seen through many events in his life including a particular myth that the reader will acknowledge in this research paper.
Prometheus Bound is an Ancient Greek tragic play that is one of three plays concerning the large-than-human figure, Prometheus. Zeus, the king of the Gods on Mont Olympus in ancient Greek religion, Prometheus, a Titan, he stole the fire from Mont Olympus and brought the secrets using fire to mortals, then punished by Zeus to a life bound in chains. This is where the title—Prometheus Bound—is given to the play. Prometheus myth is originated from ancient Greek poet Hesiod’s Theology. In Theology, Prometheus is an evildoer, a liar. However, In Aeschylus' works, he fights for human survival and against Zeus. Prometheus’s name means "anticipate," in the play, he had known that Zeus would punish him, but he declined to comment on the tales, instead, still doing the things under his willing. “It is painful to me to tell the tale, painful to keep it silent.” ---- Scene I “Prometheus Bound”. Prometheus violates the fate and against with it. This action is a tragedy but incredible. The image of Prometheus refers to the people's rebellion and noble. This revolution is intimately related to the progress of social civilization. It is rooted in the individual in the struggle with the fate, society, and itself. From time to time, people reading “Prometheus Bound”, Prometheus tagged as “iron-hearted” and “made of stone” but Zeus is “furious” and “arrogant”. However, the good
Religion is expressed in the beginning of Prometheus between the Engineers. One of the humanoids drink the black substance that we see countless times throughout Prometheus. Once the humanoid drinks the black substance as a sacrifice his body disintegrates into the water. At first the audience isn’t clear was to why this is happening but later on in the movie it is discovered that the engineers are trying to destroy humans. There is a story in the bible where God sends a flood to destroy the world. Gods reason behind it was wickedness in the world. While David, the android, puts on his suit he states, “sometimes to create we must destroy” (Scott). This is important in the
