Topic 1: Promoting Environmental Stability for Poverty Reduction and sustainable Development
Introduction
In UNEP’s Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment in 2016 report, they discovered that the developing world’s investment in renewable energy now accounts for more than 50% of all investments in renewable energies . As defined by the United Nations, sustainable development is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Three central elements are crucial to achieve sustainable development both on local and global scales, economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection. Social Inclusion, including poverty reduction, can be catalyzed by both economic growth and environmental protection. Together, environmental protection and economic growth identify both outcomes and further processes to improve the conditions in which people are both involved and effected by society. However, despite the fact that each of these elements benefit the other, governments, public and private business as well as individuals around the world continue to remain oblivious to available methods and channels to attain social inclusion and sustainable development. This guide will explore each of these elements of sustainable development and identify failed, successful and current strategies.
Recent success has been achieved in all three elements due to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
