Promoting Exercise
My days used to be packed with hours in a dance studio, rehearsing, stretching, choreographing and taking classes. I did not consider it to be exercise, because in my head, working out was something that you did not enjoy, but was essential for your health. I had no need to actively go to a gym because of the amount of physical energy dance required. I was forced to quit dancing a year ago due to my academic load in senior year. It was a huge change for my body, as I had been dancing full-time since I was 8. However, since I did not have a previous habit of going to the gym, I had a difficult time developing it anew. I decided to use this opportunity to help myself create a new routine in my lifestyle.
I wanted to experiment with both positive reinforcements and negative punishments. My positive reinforcement was to be time spent with my significant other and my negative punishment was the lack of a nightly shower, which would force me to wake up earlier in the morning. I discussed my plan with both my roommate and significant other, and they agreed to help me enforce these conditions. I planned to use negative punishment in the first week, then

On the days that I could not take a shower in the evening, I had expected that I would wake up earlier before my 8am classes in order to fit in a shower, but instead, I woke up at a normal time and took a shower after class. This did not provide me with enough incentive to exercise since I always knew that I could shower in the morning. Although I went to the gym 4 out of 7 days that I applied negative punishment to, I visited the gym less later on in the week and it was not as effective as I had expected. If this portion of the experiment was repeated, I would not allow myself to shower at all, instead of providing myself with a backup solution that I came to depend
Dance is not only a form of art or a physical activity, but a means of expressing yourself. Through dance, I gained confidence, courage, patience, and other valuable qualities, now all fused into my identity. I have danced for the past 10 years, consistently training every week, persevering through the
Negative reinforcement increases the probability of a response that removes an adverse condition. This would include the expectations that the student get an eighty percent on tests. A personal example of behaviorism in the class of the author of this paper is included as part of this essay. The author had a class teaching algebra to a junior high class. One particular year, the group of students in class were poorly behaved. They were disruptive, disrespectful and defiant of the rules of the class. The author called a meeting with the class and explained that there would be new rules which each would have to follow. Instead of telling the students what the rules were, the author let the student decide on what they would be. The students created the rules as well as the consequences which they felt were fair. Hence, the new rules were written on the board and voted on. The students reacted positively and participated whole-heartedly. Hence, taking part of the planning, there is a sense of ownership, accountability and motivation. Along with
This month I did 1800 minutes of exercise! Every day I wake up at 6:45 and I play until 7:45. I do a lot of fitness and work on soccer at that time. In the morning I do running, jump rope, and do soccer drills with my dad. This month, I learned how to head a soccer ball and improve my touch on the ball. My dad taught me how to do these techniques and he got the fear out of me. I also got a new record with juggling a soccer ball and jump rope. I did 632 juggles and I jumped roped 72 jumps at a stretch. I improved my fitness a lot his month. I had a much better performance after practicing on game-day than the last week's game. I practice soccer at least 2 hours everyday. I also scooter or bike to school 3 times a week. I live about 10 minutes
An important aspect of my operant conditioning is that the ten minute breaks are not a form of positive reinforcement but are a part of my studying time that is necessary for retaining information and giving my brain a break. For a successful study period, I would use positive reinforcement to reward myself and to strengthen my studying. This positive reinforcement was allowing myself to use my phone during the ten minute break for anything I wanted such as texting, using social media or listening to music and was done on the intermittent schedule of fixed intervals. The use of my phone as a reward is considered a type of positive reinforcement because it increases my behavior by adding a stimulus. Also, it is a fixed interval schedule because the reinforcement occurs after a specified amount of time. For a non-successful study period I would administer a negative punishment which was not
The video “The Truth About Exercise” by Michael Mosley presents some of the interesting facts about exercise. To find the best way to achieve benefits with exercise, Mosley talked with athletes and doctors for their advice. He himself also did many experiments to test the results. His findings have some similar points with the textbook’s suggestion. First, people should check their health status and training experience before engaging in an exercise program. Without any preparation, Mosley hurt his leg by performing an activity of the athlete, and he had to confirm that “You can easily hurt yourself if you are not prepared”. Second, Mosley also pointed out the common guideline in exercise, which is the rule of thumb: 150 minutes of moderate-intensity
Positive punishment is involves presenting an aversive stimulus after a behavior as occured. Where aversive is causing avoidance of a thing, situation, or behavior by using an unpleasant or punishing stimulus, as in techniques of behavior modification. For example, during learning process in the class, Ishaan did not pay attention of what his teacher told in front of the class. Besides, he was unconsciously focused on a bird feeding it’s children outside the window. Then, Ishaan was asked by the teacher to go in front of class and get the punishment as a reminder for him for not repeat the same mistake again. This situation show that when response leads to the arrival of something aversive, and this response tends to be
Exercise can be free, going for a walk/run or doing yoga at home will not cost any money. Exercise has many positive effects on the body as well as the mind such as stronger immune system, lower blood pressure, boosts energy, better self-esteem and more able to control weight (Healthline, 2015). Exercise is immediately available and does not involve taking any drugs.
Maintaining your weight, improving your mood, improving your overall brain function, and combating conditions like diabetes are all benefits to exercising on a regular basis. I exercise through biking, walking, lifting, and playing softball at RASA. I walk or bike probably three times a week, lift twice a week, and play softball two to three times a week, thus causing me to be very active. I think physical activity helps me with my mental outlook because I have time dedicated to myself, with no stress. Exercise for me is a time to think and cleanse my thoughts as well as my mind. I think my exercise routine benefits all seven habitudes, but more specifically my adaptability and my curiosity. For instance, while playing softball, I must adapt
In performing this activity/assessment, I have learned a few things. From this assignment I have learned that the amount of exercise or physical activity for a certain amount of time affects your heart rate and pulse. We were instructed to run up and down the stairs for a total of eight minutes with a 30 second break in between every two minutes to measure your pulse. We recorded data to see what our pulse was every two minutes of physical activity for eight minutes. In doing this i have concluded that the longer you perform physical activity the higher your pulse and heart rate increase, and the longer it take your pulse and heart rate to go back down to your resting heart rate.
There are an endless amount of things that contribute to our development as individuals and who we are to become. From big events in our lives such as going off to college, getting married, or staring our careers to even the simplistic things such as reading a book or attending a lecture each can leave a lasting impression. One contributor many individuals might not think about when discussing this topic is the role that exercise or sports performance has played in their lives.
Researchers thereafter developed interventions that were heavily influenced by the operant learning theory (Matson, Benavidez, Compton, Paclawskyj, & Baglio, 1996). Proponents suggest that the probability of a behaviour occurring in the future is dependent on its consequence (Bachman, 1972). As such, modifying such behaviour involves changing the consequence (i.e., reinforcement, punishment). Reinforcement is a consequence that follows a behaviour and increases the probability of said behaviour occurring in the future (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2014). Positive reinforcement involves presenting a desirable stimulus while negative reinforcement involves removing an aversive stimulus. For example, desirable behaviours are positively reinforced with tangibles or negatively reinforced by the termination of demands. Punishment on the other hand is a consequence that follows a behaviour and decreases the future probability of the behaviour occurring (Cooper et al., 2014). Positive punishment involves the presentation of an aversive stimulus while negative punishment is the removal of a desired stimulus. For example, reprimanding the client is a form of positive punishment while ignoring his/her is a form of negative punishment.
Writing this exercise journal, motivated me to exert more effort in exercising. Currently, I am preparing for the Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment, which is on March 30, and so far I’ve been pushing myself to pass the test. To explain, I was out of shape when I entered my second semester of college, and I needed to improve physically and mentally. While getting back in shape, I had to take the initiative to plan my own workout outside of Aerobics class. Thus, when having the opportunity to write out the exercise journal, I began to understand why it’s important. It’s important because a person exercising can’t be doing the same kind of exercise every day. In order to improve in a specific matter like cardio,
Punishment, as one of the reinforcement-theory strategies has been used commonly but it may bring potentially negative side effects. Therefore, punishment should not been used before positive and negative reinforcement fail. The threat of punishment for undesired behaviours is more effective than the use of punishment because punishment decreases undesirable behaviours only temporarily and may create anger and resentment, which hurt communication and undermine goodwill and personal initiative of followers (Uduji, 2013). The stimulus involved in punishment can include monetary punishment (e.g., salary deduction, demotion), non-monetary punishment (e.g., reduced sponsored holiday trips), or behavioural responses (e.g.,
As someone studying to become a health professional, I’d already been aware of the Transtheoretical model when I decided to begin a better fitness regimen. Going through the processes of the TTM model, the biggest obstacle I faced was consistency through each stage. I found that in order to execute my goal of exercising daily, I needed to correctly prepare in order to have the best exercise experience, or even begin to exercise at all.
As an Asian student, I used to be like most of Asian students. I didn 't like to exercise, and think sweating is disgusting. I started to exercise when I was on my mission. My companion all looked strong and I felt I am sissy comparing to them. I tried to copy what they did when exercising. The result wasn 't quite well. One day after I was married, I received a one week free access for a gym by my house. I went to it because I was curious about what gym looks like. It was the start of my journey of working
