In the presentation video, one of the steps in writing a paper I can discuss is proofreading. Proofreading is primarily about searching your essay for errors. Proofreading can be a difficult process, especially when you are not sure to the sentence itself rather than to the ideas of the paper as a whole. One of the best ways I think for all of us in writing process method is to revise; the paper is with their peers. Often when peers revise another person's writing, they can notice quite of few of the mistakes that the original author never would have noticed. Sure, this takes a little extra time, but it pays off in the end. If you know that you have an effective way to catch errors when the paper is almost finished, you can worry less about
I observed Dr. Jenny Crisp’s English 98 class on January 19, 2016. The class began at 12:15 PM and lasted until 1:20 PM. The room that the class met in was on the third floor of the Liberal Arts building, and the room had individual computers for each of the students to work on. The class was divided into two sections on this day because Dr. Crisp had scheduled an introductory visit to the writing lab, which began at 12:45. Prior to the visit to the writing lab, Dr. Crisp guided the class in a discussion on the topic of revision in regards to the first paper that the class had submitted. The stages of revision were discussed and the students were shown where additional help could be found within the book. Dr. Crisp told the students that the reason that their grades on the essays were significantly lower was because the essays were lacking in detail and had Type One errors. She stated that revision is important and that could help bring up the grades on the essays.
Have you ever given much thought about revising your paper? We correct the spelling, fix the grammatical errors, and give it one last read through then we hand it in. Revision is one of the most important pieces when writing an essay, but do we overlook it? I most certainly did until I read Barbra Tomlinson’s essay, “Tuning, Tying, and Training Texts: Metaphors for Revision”. Tomlinson opened my eyes and I see a whole new light when it comes to revising my papers.
One of the most important course objectives that I’ve grown accustomed to is the writing process itself. In the writing process, we are able to revise our writing where it is weak and earn a better grade than before. Since I took advantage of the revision process, not only was I able to improve my grade, but I was able to prevent the same mistakes from happening again in other writing assignments. From revisions alone, I’ve learned how to improve my writing skills and catch mistakes that I wouldn’t have seen
The art of writing is a complex and difficult process. Proper writing requires careful planning, revision, and proofreading. Throughout the past semester, the quality of my writing has evolved significantly. At first, I struggled with the separation of different types of paragraphs, and I found writing them laborious. Constant practice, however, has eliminated many of my original difficulties, and helped to inspire confidence in my skills. As a collegiate writer, my strength lies in my clear understanding of the fundamentals of writing, while my primary weakness is proofreading my own work.
Before submitting a research paper, essay, or any other written document, it is essential to carefully look over it. Proofreading is the final step that is taken before a paper can be viewed as finished. Proofreading allows the writer to decide whether or not what is written relays the message. A paper that is not written well will not communicate the message effectively to the reader.
While writing the first draft of my paper, I just go for it, unless I make a major mistake. During the writing of my first draft, I write as much as possible from what I can quickly think up and look for spelling mistakes along the way. While the first draft is not perfect, it allows me to get my thoughts on paper quickly before becoming distracted. When it is possible to leave my computer for a while before making corrections, I am able to return and realize changes that need to be made to the paper.
The tips I found most helpful for my writing was to proofread my work, to not allow others to discourage my writing, and to have motivation to think outside the box. To proofread my work means to always re-read what was writing before I turn it in for grading. Proof reading is important because any first time mistakes made can easily be recognized and fixed. When I present my work I may not always have great input of my work, there will always be critiques and negative opinions of how I should write my work. However, I am to remain positive, take the constructive criticism and to not allow someone else’s opinions discourage me from writing how I feel. I also have to have the motivation to think outside the box and that simply means to demonstrate
Proofreading is a tool used to double check someone’s work for any errors, and ensure the message is being delivered in a clear and organized manner. Proofreading can be done by the writer or a different person. When you write a document it is always best to take the extra time to proofread your document, letter, email, or whatever you wrote. This insures you have written your message correctly, and that you have not made the message confusing. In general, people have a hard time writing exactly what they are trying to say and a miscommunication in a company can cause not only a loss of profit, but maybe cause people to get fired. As I stated earlier you should always proofread your work, but it is advised to get a third set of eyes from someone
As a writer, I can adopt a system of writing that I can use most of the time. To be involved through all the composing process, I need to gather all the tools that I need such as paper and a pen, a typewriter, or a computer. I must also choose a suitable writing environment or place, and then apply my writing techniques and skills. The writing process has different ways and steps, allowing each writer to develop his or her writing in his or her own way. By describing all the steps I go through when writing, I really show my unique style of writing which can be different from the style used by others.
Proofreading one’s own work is a cumbersome task. A day or two should be spent doing this and when proofreading, attention should be paid to look for errors related to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Care should be taken to ensure that the text is clear as well as logically organized. All the necessary citations and references should be mentioned and reading aloud would aide in the
While progressing through Introduction to University Writing, there were several important pieces of information that served as reminders on how to write properly. Looking back on all of the information provided, the most important guidance I gained was proofreading my writing. No matter how many times I proofread my work, it seems there are more mistakes to be found.
Believe it or not, lots of people notice unless they’re just scanning. and it’s quite possible that many of those scanners might linger on every word you write if typos and blopers and unintentionally-broken punctuation grammar rules werent making them stumble and wonder and lose their focus?
I agree with you, Nicole, It is crucial that we proofread our writing. For example, there are instances even myself cannot make sense of what wrote the night before, so I am learning to read a paper multiple times and have someone else read it back to me before posting it for the instructor. I find myself writing a better paper if I write it in the morning. Great post,
This handout provides some tips and strategies for revising your writing. To give you a chance to practice proofreading, we have left seven errors (three spelling errors, two punctuation errors, and two grammatical errors) in the text of this handout. See if you can spot them!
This trimester in Iowa Central Comp I have learned many things. My skill in the writing process has increased greatly. When I wrote papers the writing process was much simpler until this year. At the beginning of the year, DOL’s were extremely difficult. My strengths have increased. I still have some weaknesses. During the trimester, I have learned things that I didn’t even know about before I took this class.
