Basic Argument- Native American students in Alaska disproportionally receive less involvement, support, and interaction from university faculty and staff, causing a decline in the completion of their collegiate studies. In order to support my argument, I must first prove there is a lack of faculty/staff engagement with Native students. I will also need to present research confirming that students are more likely to excel when there is involvement with university staff. Currently, I am studying how to accurately, (and without bias) create and disperse a student survey. When one typically thinks about a Native American, they picture this ideological representation of a Native American as depicted by popular culture. Native Americans are underrepresented on television, in books, in news, and all other forms of media. We, as a society, have chosen a path of ignorance in which we have chosen not to educate ourselves or our future generations on the true culture of Native Americans. We have ignored the negative impacts of using mascots such as “Redskins” and instead let it serve as a stereotype to fill our heads with unrealistic views and understandings of Native American culture. The resulting misconceptions leave many Native American students with a feeling of inferiority and questioning their self-worth.
The book called “Of Good and Ill Repute: Gender and Social Control in Medieval England” is a collection of essays, investigating medieval society. The name of the author of this book is Barbara Hanawalt, who is a specialist in English medieval social history. Hanawalt has received a PhD from the University of Michigan and has made a career of both teaching and writing. In regards to Hanawalt’s book titled “Of Good and Ill Repute: Gender and Social Control in Medieval England”, each chapter explores and discusses different aspects of medieval society in England. Hanawalt discuss a range of material, which she tries to connect and prove her thesis.
Why should Native Americans have to assimilate into the American Mainstream? Why Can’t it be the other way around? It is so easy for Americans to say “oh what you have is great, but here take this.” I think that instead of forcing our culture and religion onto people we need to consider first listening to Native Americans and learning about their culture. We need to have humility when it comes to learning about other cultures. Americans need to step out of their comfort zones and be willing to be challenged by different beliefs. Americans should embrace the different culture and make an effort to recognize it. Native Americans are humans and need to be treated as so. Instead of throwing our ways at Native Americans we should step into their shoes and ask questions to learn about them as individual people.
The oppression of people is often thought of as a political inequality. There are various forms of oppression. The forms of oppression typically thought of are violence and exploitation. However, as a society America does not see the oppression created by a lack of education that happens throughout schools. Education is a tool required for societies to advance. Lack of advancements caused by this oppression has the ability to stunt a community. Without proper education, Native Americans cannot leave this vicious cycle of oppression they face. (Congress, Chairman Rokita 2015). Native Americans are known to have the highest unemployment rates as well as the highest poverty rate. They are also known as the most educationally oppressed race in America. (U.S. Census, 2012a, 2012b). The achievement gap of Native Americans continues to widen, as the achievement gaps between other races decrease. Other forms of oppression, such as the government oppression in education, oppression of wealth (monetarily and resources) in education, and cultural oppression in education all contribute to the achievement gap of Native Americans. However, there are various solutions arising in attempt to lessen the Achievement Gap.
As an Indigenous Education Advisor, I’ve witnessed a shift in the commitment to educate non-Indigenous students about First Nation, Métis and Inuit people in post-secondary institutions. My experience in developing an Indigenous Awareness Week and conducting assessments to measure the learning outcomes of non-Indigenous students has led me to want to do research in this area. I would like to further look at long-term effects of Indigenous programming for non-Indigenous students to determine how to develop effective and valuable Indigenous programming in higher education. What attracts me to the Department of Integrated Studies in Education are the positive experiences and interactions I’ve had with students and professors from the department. Both Dr. Claudia Mitchell’s and Dr. Naomi Nichols’s research appeals to me and I believe can give a unique perspective to my work.
Another difficulty many Native American students are faced with is high absent rates. “In 2005 Native American eighth graders had the highest rate of absences of any race or ethnic group in the preceding month- 66 % of Native American students had been absent, and 30 % had been absent three of more times in the past month.” (Doak 37) It boils down to the fact that students need to be in school to succeed in school. These absences can be attributed to a uninviting school setting. Often times Native American students are overlooked in classrooms in favor of other students who are seem more likely to do well. A school environment that is unwelcoming can be a strong deterrent for any student. These students need to feel that their education is helping them, and that it is worthwhile.

Many Native Americans are unaware of opportunities that are available due to the isolation that they face on reservations. In 1992 only seventy-eight percent of Native Americans received a high school diploma. This makes Native Americans the least likely of all minority groups, besides Hispanics, to obtain a high school degree. One main reason for Native Americans being unable to obtain a high school diploma is having to leave school to get a job. If a member of their family faces an illness or disability that causes them to be unable to work, the younger members of the family are going to need to help provide for the family. This was an attempt to provide support and cooperation within federal agencies for Tribal Colleges. Few students attending Tribal Colleges even apply for federal aid and when they do, the awards rarely cover what they owe. The majority of students in these tribal colleges are single, female, and older than average. Children were taken away from their homes and told everything they knew was wrong. They were sent to boarding schools to change their culture. These boarding schools were run by the United States government. The government's goal was to civilize Native Americans. They sent children to these schools against their will. Native American children were educated like Americans and they had to change their native ways to be more like whites (Cayton 266). Teachers abused their students and beat their native ways out of them. They were not allowed to see their families so they would try to escape, but their attempts were unsuccessful. The United States government’s Boarding Schools of the mid-late 1800s irreparably changed Native American culture.
The topic I chose to do my final project on is hurricanes. The reason I chose hurricanes is because after Hurricane Sandy hit my town and the surrounding towns around me, I wanted to learn and gain more knowledge as to why and how hurricanes occur. I also researched previous hurricanes that occurred back in the 1900’s and I couldn’t believe the damage that was done and the fatalities that were caused even back then. The modern American society is best defined by its education. The “American dream” is founded on going to school, getting a good job, and becoming successful. Ironically, the actual native peoples of this country are actually the least likely to attain this dream. The largest obstacle they face is lack of proper education. The standard educational practices being used for the instruction of Native American peoples is not effective. There are many pieces to this road-block, and many solutions.
