The biggest factor as to why young African Americans are not getting into the sport may boil down to pure interest, or lack thereof, in playing and learning about the sport. Ric Wright, a member of Mount Vernon’s Recreation Department, explains that playing baseball simply isn’t “cool” for a major segment of America’s youth when they reach a certain age. “‘In the African-American community, basketball is the cool thing to do. . . Kids get to 13, 14, and baseball is no longer looked at as the cool thing to do’” (Haggerty).

In today’s society, there are many ways in which people communicate within their individual community. One community in which many people do not fully understand is the game of baseball. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the U.S. and has been deemed America’s pastime. For me, sports are my life, especially when it comes to this particular game.
