The topic I decided to write about is “Should marriage equality activists organize boycotts against publicly-held companies that have donated against their preferred side?
I found topic to be very interesting. Learning that while it appears to be a simple task of making a decision not to buy or consume a certain product based on what the leaders or owners of that company, is just bad business for everyone. I am totally opposed to the marriage equality activists organizing boycotts against publicly held companies that have donated against their preferred side. I am against this because sometimes the business norms of a company, firm or entity, keep it form making and implementing correct decisions. The bureaucratic management or bureaucracy’s

That it is morally correct to hurt them for not believing or agreeing with their cause, by making them lose money. The truth is that the only one /s that would benefit from this would be the individuals who believe that to achieve a positive outcome to their beliefs of marriage equality; they would have to turn to coercion through the act of boycotts. Which would try to make everyone believe that to get support for their cause is part of a moral principle. In reality the act of boycotting goes against what administrative ethics stand for. According to Dennis F. Thompson, Princton University, Author of Article “The Possibility of Administrative …show more content…
This would mean that we would have to take into consideration what the meaning of ‘Freedom” really means. According to Isaiah Berlin, Author of “Two Concepts of Liberty” in Isaiah Berlin (1969) Four Essays on Liberty. “He describes and defines freedom or political sense as either negative or positive. The negative freedom would be to have the ability to do something on your own recognizance to avoid harm to him or her self. The positive would be to have an entity control or interference to determine someone to do something that can be positive to their health” (Berlin, 1969, p2). This is what marriage equality activist try to use to coerce you to believing that the only way to make you accept their beliefs is to put into practice the use of negative freedom. When in reality it should be negative freedom that we need to execute to come to the
First, the request of a potentially exempted group must be a rational one, and even if most people might not agree with the viewpoint, they must be able to accept it. Second, the law must “impose unique and substantial burdens” on the potentially exempted class, because if there are not substantial burdens, the request for an exemption fails, and if the burdens are not unique, the class does not have any more of a justification for an exemption than any other group. Third, there needs to be a rational reason for most people to accept the law, because otherwise there is no point in exemptions, because the law as a whole should not exist. Finally, the proposed exemption must not incur significant additional costs on those who are not exempted, because if it does, the benefits for the exempted class are outweighed by the burdens inflicted on others. Under these criteria, Vallier argues that the Masterpiece Cakeshop should be exempted from serving gay couples. The first condition is fulfilled, because the request for the exemption is based in religious beliefs, which merit respect. The second condition is similarly fulfilled under the justification that the baker would otherwise be forced to ignore their religious beliefs. The third condition is also fulfilled, because it is quite reasonable to expect most bakers
A law that states that all people are to be treated equal, no matter the race, sex, or religion. However, a landlord can refuse to rent houses, or banks denied housing laws because of the house bill 1523 there would be millions of homeless people. Medical professional refusing treatment to the sick and dying patients. For example, a patient has cancer, and the doctor is refusing to treat them because they have had a sex change, violates the United States Equal Rights Amendment to be treated equal. Pharmacies turning away women seeking to fill birth control prescriptions, state, and government employees right to deny marriage licenses to same sex couples are all examples how the new law violates the rights of individual to have freedom of choice. Although everyone is entitled to their own religious beliefs, but when you are a business owner, or runs a business that are funded by social service agency open to the public, those beliefs do not give them a right to discriminate. While all situations may differ, one thing remains is that religion is being used as an excuse to discriminate against, and harm people who views are different from what the law states it to
No one wants to leave their country, but war, famine, and employment can cause people to migrate to find a peaceful place to stay. More than a million undocumented immigrants migrate to America every year searching for jobs and safe places for their families to stay, Because of this, every undocumented immigrant in America should be granted citizenship. The U.S government should allow the immigrants who are here illegally to become U.S citizens. Many of the undocumented immigrants do their best to assimilate, pay their taxes, and contribute to American traditions and culture. Their contributions to our country have done so much for the people, we should be honored to have them.
Under the title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination. Discrimination of basis of sex, race, color, national origin, or religion. If a profit corporation have religious beliefs they will be able to argue they have the right to side-step Title VII and, for example, hire only those who sign a “statement of faith” or share the same religious
Many people from different countries come to the US illegally. Most immigrants come here legally, and some others come the illegal way. This could be staying after visa expires, crossing the border etc. Some get caught in the process of entering the US illegally while others make it and stay living here without documentation. Many people believe that they should not be allowed to stay and here illegally because they are, to them, criminals. Others believe that they do a lot of good to this country and argue that they should be allowed to stay and legalize some of them. Throughout this paper we will discuss the pros and cons of keeping or deporting illegal immigrants and weather it is beneficial
Everyone is entitled to natural rights such as freedom of speech, freedom to protest, and freedom of beliefs or religion. However, these are personal, or private, rights, and are therefore limited in the work force. Once one brings these personal rights, more specifically freedom of religion, into the work force, they violate the separation of church and state. The separation of church and state is simply a law preventing government officials to serve with biased opinions based on personal beliefs. All government agents are expected to serve with an unbiased opinion, and it is difficult to do that if one
Thank you for your thoughtful post. In other words, you are asking how can the United States justify not providing affordable health insurance for people residing and working in country? Baiden (2010) offerings two important points, “Most, if not all of these undocumented immigrants work hard and contribute to the country's economic growth” furthermore, “The problem is that such individuals suffer high degree of exploitation at the hands of their employers” (p. 5). Undocumented immigrants are ineligible for government insurance programs, are unlikely to have employer provided insurance, and often do not have the resources to purchase private insurance. Furthermore, research has identified vulnerable populations such as low income, uninsured
Undocumented families face immense pressure getting accustomed to the new land. Many parents want to adhere to their traditional way of life, but due to the new atmosphere, they are forced to assimilate into the American culture with the hopes of becoming socially accepted. The striving force behind the American dream, as mentioned earlier, is to achieve a better life. To accomplish this, undocumented immigrants must be able attain a job and provide the basic needs and essentials of life for their family. In doing so, so many undocumented individuals experience harsh realities due to the lack of legal protection.
Undocumented immigrants provide jobs, pay taxes, and have had many positive outcomes toward the United States therefore, they should be allowed to be granted citizenship without going through all the hardships such as inhumane treatments, labeling/categorizing, harassment and detains. Undocumented immigrants are always supposedly up to no good and seen as the enemy. “There is no need for immigration so why have it?” you may ask. Throughout the years, many people have traveled to the United States from other countries to get a well paying job in order to maintain their families, to provide everything it takes to be successful for their kids, and overall to have a brighter future. Would people with bad intentions actually go through the
The controversy between marriage equality and the exercise of religious freedom is a confliction between nondiscrimination laws and religious freedom laws. Religious freedom seemed to be an important aspect of an American citizen, after all it is the very first amendment to the constitution. With each American citizen being granted equality by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, discrimination made against an individual based on his/her sexual preference may seem to violate this act. In history, religious organizations typically been immune from state and local laws prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation. However, with the cases of Obergefell v. Hodges and Kim Davis this stance is challenged.
“May we not think of freedom as the right to do as we please, but as the opportunity to what is right.” (Peter Marshall). Some people don’t think about freedom as that. Freedom is doing the right thing but when one chooses to do it. Freedom is being able to have certain rights like speaking your mind, and making one’s own decisions.
First gay rights are not free. You can not marry someone of the same sex in 13 of the 50 states. You are not free when someone makes it illegal to marry the person you love, even if they are the same gender as you. Another example of gay rights not being free is some people don't accept you for who you are. You are not free and probably don't feel very free if people are upset with you for loving someone of the same sex. Also an important reason is that you can't make medical decisions for your spouse in states where it is illegal to marry the same sex. This means if something were to happen to your spouse in a state where marrying someone of the same gender is illegal you wouldn't be able to tell the doctors what you want done and you wouldn't be able to help them your spouse. You are definitely not free if you don't have the right to do this.
The word freedom is often associated with the idea of an unfettered liberty to select from a range of alternatives coupled with a sense that our actions will not affect our natural state.
June 2012 was a year with a huge break through on illegal immigration, and the fight to set the decision right. Opportunities to improve immigrants careers, schooling, and lives, who were born in the United States and plan on staying are on the rise. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was created to provide immigrants with an opportunity to stay in the States “legally,” but continue their lives through education if graduating from an U.S. high school, going to college, serving in the armed forces, and eventually gain citizenship in the United States. Many U.S. citizen have many thoughts and views on illegal immigrants and immigration in general, and the pros and cons to having DACA support illegal immigrants to stay in the country. There is a huge decision in process currently in 2017 that is putting DACA in risk from being a Federal Program that would end up effecting many immigrants. Threatening deportation and the possibility of losing everything that DREAMers have worked up to and for and are continuing to work towards is at a huge risk of just being thrown away. Keeping DACA and protecting the DREAMers is important because mentally and physically they are just as much of a U.S. citizen as anyone else born in the U.S.
The American Anthropological Association (AAA) is voting this month on whether to boycott Israel. If the resolution passes, AAA will be the largest and oldest academic association to do so.
