My enjoyment in this week’s reading came from the authors’ use of illustrations to articulate their stories. While reading the story “Homeless”, by Anna Quindlen, through her use of illustration, I felt as though I was visualizing and experiencing this story through Anna’s lens. While reading “The Growing Cowardice of Online Anonymity”, by Richard Bernstein, through his use of illustration, I could envision the horror on the faces of those classmates victimized by “slurs, smears and secrets, true or otherwise” (Radar magazine), inscribed on the virtual bathroom walls. Both examples of exemplification essays were insightful readings relating to the flaws in human life and morals. Therefore, invoking feelings and emotions throughout the readings. …show more content…
In today’s world the internet has pros and cons. Although I believe online anonymity was initially intended to provide a layer of safety to those engaging in the use of the internet (pros), I believe this layer of safety has morphed into something sinister (cons). It is now a shield for cowards and predators hiding behind their computers, waiting to pray on their next victim. For example, an online classified such as Craigslist is a website that prides itself through the use of anonymity in an effort to protect both the seller and the perspective buyer. However, the price for this anonymity comes with great risk for the seller, and is a breeding ground for lurking
Homelessness is a growing epidemic across the country. This terrible misfortune has led to many unsuspecting people leading impoverished lifestyles, and facing the horrific and heart-wrenching tragedy of abandonment. The purpose of this essay is to not only persuade the readers to get involved in ending homelessness on local and national efforts, but to embrace new and creative ways of helping to end this rapidly growing problem, by taking action to end this catastrophic situation. Also, I will demonstrate the causes and effects of the homeless resorting to violence, by using comparison and contrast to examine the views and standpoints on helping the forgotten, so that we might end this calamity once and for all. In an increasingly
The Homeless Period On average, women spend about $3,360 on essential feminine hygiene products throughout their entire lives, but what happens when a woman cannot even afford her monthly menstrual expenses? Every month homeless women are put on a crisis situation recurring to extreme methods to cope with their periods. These women want to feel clean; unfortunately, they do not have the means to do so because pads and tampons are expensive. In fact, they are taxed as luxury items in more than thirty states. As of today, there is not a clear policy as to where homeless women can find free feminine hygiene products when they need them. This is more paupers’ problem, it is a health, hygiene, and dignity issue. The government needs to make a legislation that allows homeless women to get free pads and tampons The means by which homeless women cope with their periods are unbelievable. In their own voice periods “brings inconvenience to the level of misery” (Shay). When these women cannot afford to buy feminine hygiene products, they use whatever they can to keep themselves clean. Some of the common substitutes of pads and tampons are “toilet paper, paper towels, plastic bags, towels, cotton balls, makeup pads, socks, and [old clothes]” (How do Homeless Women Cope with Their Periods). On bad days, some women even have to reuse the same rag multiple times by washing it, drying it, and putting it back in. Feminine hygiene products are expensive and sometimes half, if not all, of what
When you see the homeless what do you think about? Do you see them and feel disgust or are you someone who wonders how and why they are where they are, or maybe, you are one of the few who want to help and who are able to. In the U.S., more than 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year and that number is growing. They are families with little children, people who are trying to escape domestic violence, people with mental illness, veterans who have served our country, and many more. From what I read in Jonathan Kozol’s “Untouchables” city officials in various places are only coming up with short term solutions, that aren’t helping the homeless. City officials are just trying to get rid of the homeless from their cities or area. I think it’s time that more individuals and groups, really gets involved and figure out a way to help those who are already homeless, and stop future people from becoming homeless. We have to come up with ways to help the homeless readjust and get back into the world.
In" The Year I was Homeless," Becky Blanton, a writer, and a journalist became a homeless describes how do the homeless people live on the street through her story when she was homeless without hope. She began her path to homelessness when her father passed away. Her shock by her father death made her moving away from her life and depressed. She was living inside her van in camping site and using the public bathroom and employee's bathroom. Then, she was moving from place to place to avoid the police. She suffered from high and low temperature. Her life was miserable. Her "IQ, talent, integrity, and values did not change while she was homeless. However, she only lost her hope that made her live worse. She also was thinking to suicide. Since
The article that was well written, talk about the condition of homelessness in the United States, and how is affecting the health and well-being of those that are homeless. In addition, the article also talks about different ways and strategy in which the government has tried to terminate homelessness. According to the article, different studies have shown that those that are homeless are more likely to develop chronic disease or acute illnesses due to unsuitable living condition, likewise, the absence of health insurance. Placing the homeless population at a higher risk for repeated emergency or hospital visits, in comparison to that of the broader population. Moreover, they have a wide range of developing substance use or mental health. They are acceptable to the act of violence, starvation, dangerous climate, sudden deaths, etc. Nonetheless, the Affordable Care Act has made it possible for more homeless
¨Homeless¨ is about Anna Quindlen doing a story on homeless people but meets a woman named Ann; who claims she is not homeless. Ann ends up showing Quindlen a photograph of a yellow house. Quindlen soon understands that a home can not just be replaced by a shelter but a home is where the heart is. We are reminded that the homeless are not just people without homes but they are just rootless.
In the landscape of today’s forever changing social environment, one thing there is without a doubt no lack of is controversial contemporary social issues. One of these topics that has received quite the spotlight recently is that of the levels of poverty and homelessness that plague our social infrastructure today. There are many different thoughts and ideals as to what is the major root cause of this systemic social issues.
As you stand in the center of the Main Street bridge with your legs pressed against the railing, your torso slightly bent over the edge, staring down at the I35 commuters below passing underneath you without even knowing you exist. Your stomach begins to rumble and you are forced back into reality. It has been days since your last real meal and with a sign folded up in your back pocket that reads “homeless and hungry” you head back to the stoplight to hopefully receive enough money to keep you off the ledge once again. We have all seen the individual with the sign at the stop light, but what we don't see is the one on the edge of the bridge just moments before. In a recent study it shows that in 2016: “550,000 unaccompanied, single youth and young adults under the age of 24 experience a homelessness episode of longer than one week. Approximately 380,000 of that total are under the age of 18.” (“2016's Shocking Homelessness Statistics.”) It has also been said that homeless teens are three times more likely to attempt suicide than housed teens.(Eleanor Goldburg) With over a half million homeless Americans needing assistance lets compare two different nonprofit organizations that use their resources to invest in the lives of the homeless and the community, to rehabilitate, and to help individuals become successful members of society. The two organizations being compared are Christian Community Action(CCA) and Journey to Dream, in order to determine who will be the recipient
On a cold rainy Saturday in December, just two days before Christmas, in 2006 Andy Sandness set out to do some grocery shopping on his day off from work. Everything was going as planned until an announcement came over the speaker at Piggly Wiggly saying “Attention shoppers please do not panic and take cover immediately.” Naturally panic immediately broke out all over the store as gunshots rang through the produce aisle. Babies were crying, mothers were covering their children, elderly people were struggling to move to a safe place, and food was flooding the aisles. Sandness, a local rancher and volunteer firefighter/emt sprung into action. He alerted authorities and located the shooter. “A million thoughts ran through my mind in the seconds
There are thousands of people homeless every year, but how many actually want to be homeless? Although some people do not want to be homeless; there are those select few that even if they are given the chance to live inside a home or buy their own and they still will not. This has shocked many people in the world. It is sometimes said to be a mental illness although some people do enjoy just not having to pay bills or be stressed from all the money issues. While some do have the choice, over sixty-two thousand children are on the streets every night and they do not have any choice (Culhane 1).
It is everywhere, yet it is unseen. Homelessness is a national epidemic which affects approximately 2% of the total population share of Michigan. Though this percentage is not as much as the 11% I used to see on the streets of my home state, New York, its effects are noticeable in the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan (United States, The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development 5). Over the course of three weeks, I have observed five regular and several wandering homeless people solely on State Street and East Liberty Street. However, homelessness is not a one-sided issue based only on affected individuals, it is also influenced by notions of the homeless from the non-homeless. There is an overwhelmingly negative connotation, a

All these people complain and protest against the homeless programs, yet they will not do anything to help out one bit. Although these people think homeless programs are ineffective, they actually feed the homeless, give them shelter, and a portion of money each month.
