When asked about cultural unification, government, and rules of law on Mars, Elon Musk stated that Mars should have a direct democracy. A direct democracy means that people are able to vote on policy directly. Musk reasons that a direct democracy, rather than a representative democracy, would be better for Mars because “the potential for corruption is substantially diminished” (Grush). However, Musk also suggests an alteration of how laws are able to stay in place. He states that on Mars, it should be easier to remove a law than to implement a new one as well as having a sunset provision. It is suggested that these zones will start out at about 100 km radius, however, this number can be debated. The size will be decided before colonization begins to ensure no future conflicts or disputes. In addition, the size can be up for expansion depending on need and mutual agreement from other colonies. Once the colonies have settled in their zone, the economic rules can begin.
