When asked about cultural unification, government, and rules of law on Mars, Elon Musk stated that Mars should have a direct democracy. A direct democracy means that people are able to vote on policy directly. Musk reasons that a direct democracy, rather than a representative democracy, would be better for Mars because “the potential for corruption is substantially diminished” (Grush). However, Musk also suggests an alteration of how laws are able to stay in place. He states that on Mars, it should be easier to remove a law than to implement a new one as well as having a sunset provision. A sunset provision is a condition that an office or program should be disbanded or ended at the end of a set amount of time unless it is officially renewed. …show more content…
It is suggested that these zones will start out at about 100 km radius, however, this number can be debated. The size will be decided before colonization begins to ensure no future conflicts or disputes. In addition, the size can be up for expansion depending on need and mutual agreement from other colonies. Once the colonies have settled in their zone, the economic rules can begin. Bruhns and Haqq-Misra suggest that economic benefits can even be used to expand colonization. For example, new colonists could be able to stay close to already existing colonies until they are able to “assess” a new location for a permanent colony. However, even though the new settlers can occupy the land within a set colony, they would not have any economic rights or any access to the resources on the …show more content…
This administration would not have any power to make laws or alter policy, but rather would act as a facilitator to set up communication between each colony, mediate when conflict arises, and simply physically store legal documents. It is also suggested that each colony either contributes funds or members in order to support the administration of this Secretariat. This would also encourage participation and communication between each colony. The first of these restrictions occurred after Parliament passed the Proclamation of 1763, in which Parliament prohibited colonial settlement beyond the Appalachian Mountains. In Harold H. Eibling’s map of the lands delegated to the British colonists by the Proclamation of 1763, the British government reserved the majority of North America not controlled by Spain for the Native Americans and the colonists could settle in the remaining areas. (doc 2) Eibling’s purpose in creating this map was to indicate the startlingly low percentage of land that the majority of people living in North America could settle on and the vast quantities of land reserved for a small minority of North American settlers. This purpose is significant because it demonstrates the spatial restrictions imposed on the colonists by Parliament. As a result of this legislation, the colonists began to feel that their freedom to settle in lands which belonged to their government. Furthermore, the colonists had little to no influence in their own government. According to the Albany Plan of Union, the President-General and Grand Council had the “power to make laws... as to them shall appear most equal and just.” (doc 4) The colonists and the British government cooperatively established this plan of union, therefore Britain had an influence in what was being written and what would be

Over one hundred and eighty sovereign states are members of the United Nations and they have different constitutions. Some have to provide for a federal structure, in others although unitary, include different legal systems within the one state. The disparities between constitutions deals with momentous ethnic, linguistic and religious considerations. Their vagueness requires a prudent imposition on what ?is? and what ?ought? to be the law. The term sovereignty could be contested due to the fact that there is no universally agreed definition. Thomas Hobbes defined what he considered the basis of a political body as 'the most high and perpetual.' (Hobbes, quoted in Heywood, 1997, p26.)

The fine line between obeying the law and not obeying it. Obeying the law kind of makes the world safer. When you don't obey a law and therefore caught doing the crime; you will be charged and possibly sentenced to a place where you are no longer free to do as you please. When you obey the law you get to do as you please with your life as long as you follow the laws. Laws are put into motion to create a safe environment for everyone to live in. No one should have to be worried about their lives everyday; but there are accidents everyday in which lives are lost.
