Schools all over the world are debating if they should give drug tests out to athletes and club members. I have a very strong opinion about that; I think that all students should be drug tested if their parents approve of it. The reason I think this is because I know there is a lot of people out there that do drugs and need help. I think that drug testing can help most of them stop, but research shows that the percentage of people that do drugs increases if their school does drug tests. Another reason I feel this way is because I want to be a part of a drug-free school/area. Drugs are the worst thing in mankind. Drugs do nothing for people but hurt them. Sure there are drugs/steroids that can make people get bigger, but they just kill the insides of people. It’s pretty much like dumping a bottle of acid into a person’s insides. So now on to High School Drug Tests where they negatively affect students.
“A medical dictionary defines a drug as ‘any substance that when taken into the living organism may modify one or more of its functions’” (Newton 12). However, when speaking of drug testing for abuse a person is usually thinking about illegal drugs or drugs that can alter athletic performance in sporting events. Mandatory drug testing was not allowed in public schools until June 2002 when the Supreme Court allowed for public schools to do random drug testing (Carroll 23). This decision allowed for drug testing in all schools throughout the United States not just for athletes but also students who are in any activities within the school, for example clubs and competitive events (Carroll 23). Even though drug testing is now allowed by
Drug testing may not seem like a common topic of discussion but in my opinion it should
As we all know drugs are a major health issue in America. According to the New York Times schools have been drug testing students in New York City. Schools require the children to pee in a cup to see if they’re taking drugs for want reason? “States with middle schools that conduct drug testing include Florida, Alabama, Missouri, West Virginia, Arkansas, Ohio, New Jersey and Texas.” No the students shouldn’t be drug tested by the schools. Drug testing the students is invading the students privacy which is rude.
In many high schools around the country, student athletes are using drugs. “The percent of students that have drunk alcohol is 72.5% while the number of students who have used marijuana is 36.8%” (Report: Nearly Half of High School Students Using Drugs, Alcohol). The students believe that since they are athletes that they do not need to abide by the rules because they feel more superior and that the narcotic will not hurt or affect them. Implementing random drug tests for athletes will create a positive image and not hurt others or themselves. Schools need to have drug tests for student athletes because drugs effect relationships, using drugs have consequences, and lastly they have a major effect on the body.
“Why aren’t you doing softball this year? You're the best player on the team and your batting average is almost perfect!” I asked. “They did drug tests and I failed mine, so I can’t play this season.” I herd under a mumbled breathe. I shouted, “that is why schools should not have drug tests, they are restraining great athletes from doing what they do best! You have great grades, participate in extracurricular activities, and even help with food pantries outside of school so why would they be punishing you for this?” Schools should not be drug testing student athletes for these reasons: drugs do not determine the way students play, forbids them from playing a sport they like or are good at, and it restricts some students from participating in extracurricular activities because they are scared they might get drug tested.
When it come to drugs now in 2016, there are many people around us that we don't know are using them. Sports such as, tennis, soccer, basketball, football ,etc. are definitely competitive. There is an absolute necessity for schools to include drug testing programs for the safety and fairness of their students, but one of the problems schools face if the lack of funds.
Should high school athletes be tested for drugs? In my opinion I think they sound be tested if they are using drugs to enhance their ability in sports. I think this way because it's cheating and enhancements shouldn't be used. The use of drugs has increased in high school athletes. Students are thinking that doing this makes it okay but in reality they don't know the trouble they're getting into. I hope that students will learn that these drugs will hurt you.
Even though drug testing is very expensive, ALL high school’s athletes should be tested because drugs are bad for your health and very addictive. A simple drug test could save many lives. Many schools around deny the request to drug test their athletes for the simple conclusion that the cost of the testing would just be to expensive. I disagree whole heartedly on that because although it may be expensive, we could save so many lives by requiring drug tests to play sports. Many students have love for the game who would have no problem giving up drugs for the chance to play sports with drug tests and a little guidance.
Drug-testing applicants, as well as recipients, on welfare has been an ongoing debate for multiple years. Many have argued that if an individual has to be tested to get a paycheck, others should be tested and screened to receive a federal check of financial aid. Those individuals who are recipients of the welfare program should be drug-tested nationwide to eliminate the problematic spending of taxpayer dollars. Since 1971, this type of testing has been used for military purposes, in the work force, and has recently been incorporated into state welfare laws. With this addition, controversial topics, such as how these tests are paid for and whether or not they violate the fourth amendment as an unlawful search, have arose. Although, they have
In high schools throughout the country, drug and steroid use is skyrocketing. In a recent survey, 35.1% of high school seniors said that they have smoked pot within the past year, nearly 44% of students know someone who sells drugs (The Recovery Village), and 6% of athletes have used steroids; even that number is predicted to be much higher (Global Sports Development). Many of these students are also participating in sports or other activities. Drugs and steroids provide an unfair playing field in high school sports, and in all levels of athletics. Drug use is a pervasive issue in today’s premier leagues of sports, whether it is the Olympics or the NFL. It seems as if not a day goes by where we don’t see a headline about an elite athlete being busted for drug use; why don’t we have the same protocols being used in high school sports? This is why we should have mandatory drug testing for high school athletes. We will begin by discussing why this is currently a problem in our schools, then we will look into the causes of the problem and how we as a society have contributed to it, and finally we will review potential solutions to the problem.
The amount of homicides have increased by 7.4 percent in the past few year all of them were drug related. Drug testing High school athletes is a good idea because it has the kids pick a priority in life. It also teaches them responsibility and the consequences
Some people are discussing whether drug testing student athletes should be allowed in school or not, I think it should be allowed and here are some reasons why. Parents continue to argue with coaches saying that drug testing shouldn’t be allowed because it makes the children nervous and it makes it hard to focus on them. Some coaches agree that drug testing shouldn’t be allowed, they say that the kids can’t handle the pressure of the possibility of the results coming out incorrect. If students continue to take drug tests, I think it should be monthly based and not random so that they know when it is and it would no longer be random. If students had to take monthly based drug tests it would help the team as a whole because everyone would be healthy, it would also create a better community, and it also makes everything fairer.
In the United States, 27.2 percent of high school student participated in illicit drug use. While this number has lowered in the past two decades, dug use among teens is still a large issue. To combat this problem many schools have opted to drug test their students. Schools do have the right to drug test their students but there are constitutional limits in which a school can require mandatory drug testing. The constitutional limits include; health risks and personal injury risks.
It seems that drugs have become a major epidemic within teenagers in the last few years. There is only so much that can be done to try and eliminate drug use, while not dramatically changing anything in the community. Drug testing the district’s student athletes provides many reasons that it is a worthwhile expense. Lawyers, Mark Vetter and Daniel Chanen, stated in the Sports Law Institute Newsletter “First, student-athletes were the leaders of the drug culture” (Vetter and Chanen ¶3). This simple statement proves that athletes need to be drug tested; it will improve multiple circumstances within the district and the lives of athletes. Drug testing student athletes at the high school level is a step every school district needs to take in order to improve their schools, and the students’ lifestyles despite the high price tag on these tests.
