Drugs-whether prescription, over the counter, or behind the counter-have either a beneficial or adversary effect. Prescription drugs are “licensed medicine that is regulated by legislation to require a medical prescription before it can be obtained.” They require a physician’s prescription in order to be utilized. Over the counter drugs are “medicines sold directly to a consumer without a prescription from a healthcare professional.” They play an active role in society today, for most people use prescription drugs to have immediate care. Behind the counter drugs, on the other hand, are “medicines that are stocked behind the counter of a pharmacy which require the attention or counsel of a pharmacist before being dispensed or handed over to a consumer or patient.” They are in-between prescription drugs and over the counter. BTC drugs are transitional drugs that have side effects and need pharmacist advice in order to most effectively use them. Research from The Pharmaceutical Industry and Prescription Drugs have shown both positive and negative viewpoint of BTC drugs. BTC drugs face the struggle of legally creating a BTC class, consumer responsibility regarding intake and possession, and expenses regarding usage. With proper knowledge and information regarding BTC drugs, BTC drugs can be exploited. …show more content…
Since the 1970s, The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has denied BTC drugs legislation. It argues that a new class of medicines is not needed, nor is the hassle of acquiring medicine without the discretion of a medical doctor. Information from Web MD, reported by Todd Wellich, states that the FDA is considering establishing the new class of drugs. Some drugs are already sold behind pharmacy counters and are acting as surrogates to the concept of BTC drugs. If BTC drugs were allowed legislation to be their own class of medicine, they could have a beneficial effect on the health
Prescription drug abuse is as dangerous to your health as illegal drug use. According to the article “Prescription Pain Medications: What you need to know,” there are many pieces of evidence that show the danger of prescription medications. Three examples of theses dangers from prescription medications in the article is that people can stop breathing, can begin addictions that may get worse, and overall overdosing on prescription medications. These prescription medications, opioids, such as OxyContin, Vicodin, Percodan, etc. are made with a plant called the Poppy Plant, which is also an ingredient for illegal opioids such as heroin. In paragraph five it says, “In fact, they now outnumber deaths from heroin and cocaine combined.” Furthermore,
As for drug abuse, the primary focus by countries worldwide has been one of enforcement and education. While this has certainly found to be effective when dealing with recreational drugs such as cannabis and hashish and controlled substances such as methamphetamines, heroin, cocaine and club drugs, it has not worked in the case of prescription medicines.

Prescription medications serve the purpose of helping individuals with symptoms that are occurring in the short term. The perception people have on prescribed medication is widely positive due to the high number of daily consumers, but the world is only viewing the positives on this controversial topic. Consumers who have illnesses should not rely on prescription medications due to the negative side effects, high addiction rates and potential increase in crime proving that home remedies are much more reliable, healthier and safer alternatives.
In the article “Young, Assured, and Playing Pharmacist to Friends,” it describes different types of people in different situations from different places all participating in the new craze of self-medicating. All of the people described were young and confident in their ability to know what prescription pills were best suited for their problem at that time. These self-medicating young people trade pills in exchange for other pills, and often times take them without a doctor’s permission, and justified it with the use of the Internet. This pattern of pharmaceutical sharing reflects the larger medicalized culture of pursuing the better self by showing how and why the younger generation self medicates. In the article one woman even describes that she feels that she knows more about what she is talking about, pertaining to what prescription drugs she should take, than a doctor does.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA, 2014), Non-medical use of prescription drugs (NMUPD) applies to individuals who use prescription medications that are not prescribed to them, as well as the individuals who do in fact use the medication that which is prescribed to them, although not in the manner that is instructed and expected of them by their doctors (NIDA, 2014).
An important, and often overlooked issue that school administrators face is the widespread use of pharmaceutical drugs to address mental health problems. Statistics show that prescription of mental health drugs has been on an upward trend. In 2001, thirty-nine out of a thousand children were using antipsychotics (Harris, Sorbero, Kogan, Schuster, & Stein, 2012, p. 1). While these drugs may have a short-term positive impact, this tactic is not effective long-term due to the side effects and the potential for abuse of these drugs. According to Compton and Volkow, “prescription drug misuse was second, after marijuana, in terms of prevalence among the illicit substances among 12th graders”. They further state that utilization of pharmaceuticals
The use of prescription drugs has significantly increased over the years and has become one of the leading epidemics due to the fact that prescription drugs are not illegal. The idea is that prescription drugs are given to you by a doctor, so it must be acceptable to do them right? Wrong. Opioid pain killers have led to more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined, and have been known to ruin people’s lives. After watching the video clips regarding prescription drugs, I have learned a lot of information and have a whole new insight. My reaction and what I found most shocking changed as I watched both of the videos. Before observing the clips, I would have never imagined prescription drug use to be so corrupt and wide spread.
If the importation of prescription drugs becomes legally acceptable some positive and negative externalities will be creates. A positive externality is that the market prices would come down because the companies creating the prescription drugs will then have to compete with other companies across the world. This would then create lower prices for the consumers and those that do not traditionally buy medications like people who are not always sick. The public good in this is that people who do not work and live off of welfare and other such programs can get medications for much cheaper. With the positives comes the negatives, though and the negative externality of this is that the market in the United States could completely go away altogether

Due to my love ones having health issues and always going to the doctor’s office, I would always take interest in whatever the doctor would prescribed to them such as medications that neither I nor my loves one know about. Since I am an inquisitive person, it makes me wonder why those prescriptions are prescribed leading up to one of my special interests. I like to do my own research on the medication prescribed to see the benefits it has or what exactly it’s being used such as medical equipment to fight an infection or to help with carbon dioxide (oxygen tanks). Whenever I can, I would read any scientific books that I can get my hands on. For example, my friend has epilepsy and I didn’t know what it was, so I picked up a pharmacology book
While I can agree that the definition of drugs as ‘legal’ or ‘illegal’ during the period between World War II and the Cold War have been determined to ensure the global dominance of several private American pharmaceutical companies, and not by public health and safety concerns, I must add a very critical aspect to this statement. Not only did American corporations who manufactured drugs as their stock trade dominate the global drug market, the United States government was also ensured global economic and political dominance by controlling the definition of the legality of drugs. This collaboration between drug companies and the U.S. government, ensured that both would dominate and dictate, in the long term, and ensure that they would both benefit
In recent years, there has been an influx of attention being paid to the health and wellness of many people across the globe. This is come about due to the gained knowledge and awareness of what prescription medicine may offer in terms of risk to one's overall health in time. One of the major controversies around BTC is its legality. While it has not been made illegal up till now, there have been certain instances like shutting down of Silk Road by FBI which do not give positive indications [6]. It should be noted here that the BTC system was not here the main target but the drug dealing which was happening through it. Regulations are not easy to put around because of the core decentralized anonymous nature of bitcoin technology.
